Sorry, doh - yeah I forgot he has the injectors placed there... So foam isn't a good idea there of course.

I don't run any filters at all and haven't had any problems thus far - and many AE86's are run like this in Japan.... Then again, the roads are good quality here and usually clean (We don't get crud lining the wheel arches & causing rot, for example) so this may be a valid factor to consider. The only time the engine bay gets a bit of dust in it is when I come off a track and into the sand, but the alloy under guard offers protection then..

The recommendations above are what was confirmed by Techno Pro Spirits when I was going through the same thinking processes as you guys... No filters and a plate beneath is the best setup if primarily what you're after is performance. Coarse mesh filters are going to give more negative than positive results TBH. I'm just sharing genuine knowledge here..
