GZE swap or N/A tuning
Whats up everybody...

Yesterday I went to Ad from groundspeed.nl and talked to him about building in a GZE engine...

The costs are gonna be - 1250 for the 145 bhp engine
OR
1750 for the 165-170 bhp version.
An addition cost around 1500 / 1750 euro's for building it all in.

Now then... I would like to know what would be better to do - either tune the 4age to a certain degree where it has more torque and just a bit more power. (without the ITB option - I dont want to do that).
OR to go for the GZE swap.

(If I wanted to tune the 4age I would go with CatCams - Different exhaust line - 2.0 way diff - and thats about it I think).

Also... I cant do anything myself. I always need somebody to help or to do the whole thing for me.
Also... Is it easy to make an intercooler for the GZE (front mounted).
Please tell me all the pros and cons of this job as I am dead serious to get this ball rolling. Thanks.

145bhp version: Dont bother with that
170bhp version: Gonna break the shit out of your drivetrain (T50 tranny and/or your diff)

Buy a Blacktop instead Wink

To be fair the early versions will produce about the same horsepower as the later spec DLI versions with the smallport.

With a big pulley both produce around 180bhp. The DLI smallport has a much, much better torque curve though, therein lies the difference.

I used to have a fairly modded AE92 spec GZE in my old AW11 (was the first in the UK to have this engine back in 2001 in an AW11).

Good intercooling is the key though as heatsoask is an issue as the roots blower is spinning a fair bit beyond it's operating range with a big pulley so generates a lot of heat. Much less of an issue in an AE86 though with a decent front mounted intercooler.

Thanks peeps...

I was also talking with Lennert for a bit on msn... He is also rooting for the GZE early type with a bigger pulley and such.

I would like to do the swap with the older GZE but I would be out of money if I did that.

So I would first drive home without an intercooler - then I would have to let a friend help me do the intercooler properly and then eventually the pulley stuff.

For a stock AE86 - would this be good to handle? Also to drift with it?
Thanks.

(I read on another forum that its best to get a water/air IC and put it on top of the header or something but protect it from heat.

Much better to use an air/air intercooler front mounted tbh. On a mid engined car like the MR2 it's a good solution to use a water to air intercooler, but air to air is preferable.

Turbo it or put in another engine.
That's coming from a guy who spent lots of money on his NA 4AGE.

my ideal GZE early version:

camshafts from CATCAMS (without conversion stuff so the ones with 8.5 mm lift and 9 mm lift low duration)

Big pulley conversion

big radiator
big oil cooler
FMIC

And voila that engine should produce around 185-200 bhp and some nice torgue due to the camshafts. Though it will be stressfull on the drivetrain if you hammer it alot. Some people have driven years with these mods. (except camshafts)

To be honest. You can break anything if you hammer it. Even with a standard 4age. Its just the amount of maintenance you give it.
