4AGE engine tuning discussion
NoHachi,

No need for the flamesuit mate, we're back talking about tuning 4AGs, no problem in saying why you think Jamie is over-estimating. I just wanted to put a stop to the pointless debate of the poinlessness of 4AG tuningBig Grin

If it costs over 2000 euro's to get more then 200hp by turbocharging, so be it..

Still it will be interesting to see what can be obtained by jamiemirrors idea, even if it only gets 170 to 180 hp or something like that in a relative safe way, that is still worth it to some.
Also for the junkjard scavangers, there are so many good parts to get second hand that may still get the total price down Big Grin

And in the end, until someone actually does it, we wont know how possible it really is.

BTW, I came across this article of a guy testing a few of the DIY NA-mods to a 4age including dynos. Maybe someone here might find it interesting.

BTW, once you have all the parts complete for the expensive package, I would think that you should be able to safely run higher boost then 7 psi. So more then 200 should be well within reach.

Thats the whole thing isn't it.. If you do everything yourself, make everything yourself, etc. then you don't spend money other people trying to do the same thing would be spending. You could take a big block of steel and the right tools, and build an engine from scrap, that wouldn't cost you more then 100 euros (and many many many many weeks of work).

So for that person, this may be a 1000 euro tuning, for another trying the same thing, that person may have to spend 5000 euro to do the same thing. Also you don't know the history, maybe this is the 15th engine this guy has build, should the costs of that experience be factored in aswell? It all depends on who you are, where in the world you live, etc.

Also depends very much on how healthy the engine was when he started, and also the question whether this engine will live long or blow up after 10.000km.

Don't just say an engine upgrade cost you 1000 euros just because thats what you paid for the parts. Add the costs you would have spend if you had let someone do all the work for you (adding that this person would not only charge you the cheapest hourly rate, but one representing the level of skill such a person should have). Then you get a realistic figure of what the tuning of an engine costs. If its still 1000 euro's, I wanne meet this guyBig Grin If it suddely becomes 5000 or 10000 euros which is likely.....

Anyways, lets stop with the number throwing, esp in the "I know this guys that" fashion, stick to facts Big Grin

That said, tune an engine, write down what you spend, how you've tuned it, what work was involved, start a project thread to document it, now that would be cool! Then we can judge how much the parts costs, what existing parts you used (and others may have to buy or fix), what time you've spend, etc. Add all those together and you can really compare the cost of tuning to another persons approach.

Then he modified the head, so that the throttlebody's where titltet up, for better flow, and then he found alternative places to put injectors

WTF!? Huh
So he's capable of modifying the head himself. Think not much people around here can do that on a high level. Wink
