What price clean air ?

I agree, mine certainly sounds like it makes more power When considering the difference in performance between factory and aftermarket filter setups, don't forget to look at the resistance to flow. Flow resistance varies as the square of the velocity, and is also affected by bends, changes in direction, expansions or reductions in cross sectional area etc. On the factory AE86 intake ther are a lot of these, and most are eliminated with the Apexi system. At low rpm's the airflow is low, and almost any intake system will work OK. But at high rpm's, flow resistance starts to become significant, and it is at this point that the freer flowing system will show an advantage. I agree that the OEM paper filter is a good, but not good enough to offset the less turbulent flow and lower overall resistance of the aftermarket setup. Of course, more modern cars have better airbox and intake designs, and there is very little evidence to support performance gains from installing pod filters. In fact I have seen several tests that show a loss of power when ditching the nice factory tuned intake for a random shiny pod Cheers... jondee86 |

Is there any good 'performance' filter that you can install in the stock airbox?
I actually really like the view of the stock system since a replacement filter would make the engine bay look empty on that side. |

If you take a look at the first of the two videos posted above, you will see a comparison between a clean OEM panel filter and a much-hyped and expensive oiled fabric filter. The result was that the OEM filter made more power and the "performance" filter went in the bin. On the AE86 the OEM filter works just fine at keeping dust and dirt out of the engine. The ducting design is not exactly free-flowing, but it was also designed to dampen intake noise. It may cost a little power at high rpm's. However, unless you spend a lot of time driving at >7000rpm it is not worth worrying about. Cheers... jondee86 |

Also, engine will run a bit lean at high rpm if stock filter is replaced with something bigger and less restrictive.
So, you need to retune ECU/engine to get real improvements when replacing stock filter at WOT and high rpm. |

A bit different... but my engine is a bit different....
Ford Ranger small pick up truck original air box... The Ranger uses a 2.9 liter V6... so from an air volume POV I should be ok using it for my 1.6 Not only does it fit neatly, but it also has a perfect location for the aftermarket management air temp sensor. And with a little bit of Home Depot thrown-in... ....so the air box can collect the cooler air from directly behind the passenger headlamp. Oh... as far as air flow... the airbox in this case "consumes" about 4hp. Dyno with it off 145 @ the wheels, with it on 141 Dan - You can | .... OR you can ask for help!!! Hahahah !!! I have a nice steel drum type air filter housing in the shed
that came off a 2-litre turbo car... This was once destined to be used with a cold air box for the ITB's but got put aside because making the cold air box got into the "too hard" basket at the time. Had visions of taking air from behind the light and cutting in another duct that went downwards and collected air from behind the bumper somewhere. Cheers... jondee86 |

Labelled Cyclone? Then it must be from a late 80s early 90s Mitsubishi engine. By any chance a 4G63 from the Colt/Lancer?
