2000 wont go far,
Cams, ITBs & cheap loom + management, as the above question, it depends on what country you are in.

An 86 is for Life, not just for Christmas

What engine do I want in my AE86?
Im in Sweden but I think the company will bring it from Japan since the same company buys parts and cars (I bought my Skyline through this company) from Japan.

The cost (2k euro) is my guess only, its up to them to accept my specification of engine when I tell them what I want. They just said "what engine do you want" but I want them to say OK! to a 2-3k engine instead of saying NO! to a 20k engine. Wink

Hmm I bought my Red Top for 150 Euro and even though it runs well its still an old engine so dont really have any interest in start hotting it up, I have my mind set on a 20V which I can change parts on later on. Smile

But 20V engines are old and the got no tuning potential.

Spending 2-3k on a 16v will give you the same power and better torque figures Wink

What engine do I want in my AE86?
Thanks for giving me new input, because I make my judgement on texts like these:

"Fifth Generation "Black Top"
The fifth-generation 4A-GE engine produced from 1995 to 1998 is the final version of the 4A-GE engine and has black cam covers. This engine is commonly known as the "black top" due to the color of the valve cover, and yet again features an even higher compression ratio (11:1). The air flow sensor is replaced with a MAP sensor, the diameter of the four individual throttle bodies was increased from 42 mm to 45 mm, the exhaust port diameter was increased, the intake cam lift was increased from 7.9 mm to 8.2 mm and the intake ports were significantly improved in shape, contour and also the width at opening at the head was increased. Additionally, the black top had a lighter flywheel, a larger plenum, lighter connecting rods and revised rubber velocity stacks, and was also offered in 1997 with a six-speed C160 transaxle. This revision increased the power to 165 PS (121 kW) at 7,800 rpm with 16.5 kg·m (162 N·m) of torque at 5,600 rpm. These figures were issued by Toyota and are considered optimistic. It is assumed that Toyota ran the motor without ancillaries to inflate the power ratings, as some companies did before the adoption of the SAE J1349 rating standards in 2005. Still, the 'Blacktop' has become a favorite among enthusiasts and is used as an easy power upgrade for the early Toyota Corolla models, especially for use in the drift scene. Squeezing extra power from such a highly strung, naturally aspirated engine can be expensive because of the relatively high state of tuning of the stock motor, and most gains come from higher lift cams and engine management."

Thats why I allways thought a Black Top is better to use than an Red Top for that extra power and sound. Smile

Im thinking wrong? Wink

I don't understand why you so focused on the Blacktop? A Swap cost easy 2000-4000€ if you want it done right and.
Also as said before, finding a Blacktop in good shape can be tricky, most of them were driven hard.
Better take your Redtop and tune it with the same amount of Money 160PS+ Hurray!
A Redtop with ITB's sounds similar to an Blacktop engine.

But at the end its your choice.

If i was given the chose i would also chose to tune the redtop over getting a blacktop
So many chose with the redtop for the same money of the blacktop

2000 euro? (about $3000 US)

Buy a built redtop head from me...($1000) buy a decent pair of 264 type camshafts($700) and spend the rest on rebuilding parts for your redtop.

I agree with you skyracer go for blacktop .Also all the internals of the blacktop are the lighter of all 4a engines the wards to say correct for the blacktop is REVHAPPY engine. My personal opinion is the best ever 1600cc engine ever build along with the b16 of honda.
