As one of the moderators around here I should be ashamed of myself for the way I treated my hachi the past few years. I havent layed a finger on it in about two years, and must admit I havent had the urge.
Got accustomed to reliable boring FWD cars by now, but that's just because I learned my lesson with buying daily drivers (new-ish and reliable > older but more fun).

Luckily I can pay some other guy to do the hard work for me, so that's exactly what I did. Here's what I found today:

There's still loads to be done:
The doors need a little bit of welding down below (comes standard on any old ae86).
The chassis rails around the fuel tank have more in common with crisps than they do with solid steel.
Some welding needs finishing up so it will look better when painted.

After that the hard part comes... cleaning (especially getting the old coating from the floorpan), sanding, rustproofing, you name it.

Tomorrow I will be ripping it's soul out (the 4age), because my bro's KE25
could do with a little poke at the moment.
I intend to return it's original spirit to it once more when it's all painted. By this I mean it's original engine, in restored state (ebay ell-cheapo parts all the way, if it get's too boring with the low compression pistons I'll slap something else in there, or turbo it). But that's waaaayyyy in the future right now.

It is looking a bit better than it used to be! Smile
What about the rust at rear near the gastank. Do you need to remove the gastank for that as well? Dumb question

Some more work done today...

I wont be missing it for a while anyway. And this way it's one step closer to being totally stripped.
The fueltank will indeed have to go as well.. If it's badly rusted I'll just buy myself a canadian fuek tank.

For the time being, I'm still waiting for the rest of the welding to be finished up (the yellow painted bits in the previous photo's are the todo list), when that's finished, I'll start worrying about the underneath.

What worries me more is how I'm going to clean the damn thing up.
It's totally covered in all kinds of crap, from underbody coating to years
of grime.

Thumbs up! You actually did something on the hachi !! Hurray! Hurray!

Well, regarding the inside. I can help you with that. The stuff I have on my floor pan is really good. The underside is the biggest problem I guess. Though anything still sticking good should simply be redone.

Spent a few hours trying to clean up under the hood this afternoon.
My god what a shit job that is! Confused
The fact that I had to do it in the greenhouse in sunny conditions didnt help either (did lose a pint of sweat or two)

It's a shame I dont have a car ambulance handy, otherwise I would load her up and drive to the nearest cleaning station to give it some high pressure blasting.

Some more welding is going to be done until I go on vacation, I'll be sure to update this thread with some pics then.

I agree, with all that weight added to the front its bound to understeer.

Many thanks guys... I also lack the ability to make cool noises, and my exhaust gasses will not pass smog :o ,so I'm gonna have to swap myself for a rebuilt 4age at the end of the line.

The blue AE86 is a real shitter that Aram is is having restored some time this year. My car is at the storage center that Mux used to go to, it now has an unusually high AE86 density Big Grin .

I was promised that some more welding would be done this week, I have 2 days off next week that I'm going to use to get some more work done before I head out to that sunny but burnt down shithole (called Greece Tongue ) for my holiday.

Come to think of it..a 4A-GE+T50 is actually close to 160kg..so this might be a handling upgrade Cool

But I predict that throttle response will be very lazy
