Hilux/Hiace LSD Diff
This has probably been asked time and time again, but i do not know much about the drive train past the gearbox (can anyone point me towards a good website etc?) and i recently saw one of my favourite cars with a hilux LSD rear diff (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors...140664.htm)

I guess that a hilux diff would be very tough but i do not know about the gearings and other things. Can anyone shed some light on this? Is it a viable option on a small budget?[/url]

Whow, be sure to post the info you find on this. I've read many times before the hilux rear end will fit the hachi just fine. I dont know how easy the swap is though. I'd imagine the gearing to be faverable since its a truck. But that is just a guessSmile

Probably has the whole hilux rear swapped in..That means rewelding all the 5 link connection supports and possibly the shock mounts too..pretty difficult thing to do, and if I'm not mistaken wider then stock as well.

The 8" toyota rears do have lots of jeep parts for em..so cheap LSD's ring and pinionsets etc.

Yep, you'll have to invest a lot of effort to get it installed, but the advantages are many:
-wont break (unless you have some ludicrous engine swap, and even then it will handle a lot of abuse).
-truck parts are CHEAP. Ring and pinion kits for under 100 dollars etc... lots of ratios to choose from. And you can get truetrac of posilock LSD's from the US, which are maybe 500 dollars, new.

Ah funny how that goes. In alot of threads on club4ag they talk about the hilux swap being a easy option, obviously not that easy to do thenSmile

Well, that is a subjective thing, if you weld stuff all day long then cutting and refitting a couple of brackets is indeed easy. But I dont know about the driveshaft (does it need to be shortened?), and if the hilux rear is very wide, then you'll run into problems with your rims. You can offcourse get the axles shortened and resplined, at which point you are way past the point where you could call it easy.

Its easy if you live in the united states..you could have a complete 8.8" ford rearend modified, refurbished and equipped with a new LSD for probably less then the cost of a Cusco diff..maybe slightly more..You have shops specialising in cutting/resplining etc..think its about 400 for a complete rear. and another 200 for the brackets etc.

I'm kindoff in dubio about the welding of the rear brackets..I think you REALLY want to have that done by a certified welder that does welds that conform to NEN standards..checking them by x-ray etc.. You really don't want those welds to fail..luckily its all thick steel so nothing too difficult.

I'm doing this myself for my KE25..but that ones easier as it only needs 2 spring platforms welded to it..makes the welding-mockup much simpler. Luckily I have a welding instructor willing to make sure that I don't kill myself.. doesn't hurt that one of the top-dutch institutes in weld-process research is also the place where I go to exercise..

This is quite a good website. http://www.superjamie.net/oldcorollas/ot...sions.html It suggests a ford falcon, holden (vauxhall) commodore or skyline rear end.
