changing diff ratio, broken LSD???
Hi,
my freshly rebuild diff with TRD LSD just started to get excesive input shaft radial play. Sad I´ve no idea whats wrong, cause it has been assembled with new bearings and solid spacer by a professional shop. Any initial ideas?
Is there something to take care of if I´m using the solid spacer?

In the meantime:
Since I need the car in 2 weeks and probably won´t be able to fix it.
I have a complete T292 Celica TA22 diffhead sitting in my garage. It´s the same spline as Zenki AE86 and the bolt pattern should be the same.
I´ve considered to weld it and use it instead of my LSD.

BUT it´s a 4,1:1 and not a 4,3:1 like the AE86.

Anyone run a 4,1 on a AE86 before, is it much different? (more top speed?)

Only possibility if you have a solid spacer, is that the Drive Pinion Nut
has come loose. This should have been a new nut, and the top edge
should have been "staked" with a punch to bend the edge into a slot on
the pinion, and lock the nut against rotation.

Disconnect the rear prop shaft companion flange, and put a socket on the
nut. If you can turn it without "unstaking" the nut, then it has loosened.
Stand to be corrected on this, but with a solid spacer, I think you can just
torque the nut up and stake it properly.

It is possible, but highly unlikely, that one of the pinion bearings has
collapsed. If it had, you would be hearing a noise like concrete mixer
coming from the rear end !!!

Thanks for the tip!
Tbh, I´ve thought about the same thing... Smile
Its just to quiet for a broken bearing and it didn´t get worse during a 700km drive!

I hope it´s that easy...

Ok, the TA22 Diff does have a different housing, so I won´t be able to swap it straight into my AE86 Sad

I´ve also looked an tightened the pinion nut, no change.
But I have another idea:
All the bearings were new, I drove them for maybe 1000km the new bearings settled a little. Is has only very small play, and it didn´t get worse for another 600km, going by the the noise, the contact pattern stayed the same, too!
If I had a crushed sleeve I just need to retighten everything, and it whoud be fine.
The Bearings seem fine, no tight spots, overall smoth running. Smile
During the solid spacer it cant be retightend, it needs to be disasembled a few of the solid spacer shims need to be removed.

Does this sound resonable???
Thanks

Sounds like the 'professional' shop put all the shims in, instead of setting the rotational torque to factory specs by using only the necessary amount of shims.

There should have been no radial play with the pinion shaft.

Found the problem, the bearing have settled, so the spacer got loose, but the shop will readjust it for no extra cost. He said it happens sometimes, especialy with cheap bearings.
Not sure what kinda bearings I got from weir performance... Confused
