Distributor RedTop vs. Bluetop
Did anybody put distributor from RedTop on BlueTop engine.

They are little different, but I think it can work with no trouble.

The main question is does it fit mechanicaly, does driven gear fit.. etc. ?

Pic down is the BlueTop one (on my car), and upper pic is RedTop one (from AE92 GTi).

I'm not completely sure, but I think they send different types of signals to the ecu, making them incompatible. Something to do with the number of teeth on the signal gear.

Manual doesn't make any difference between them about signal. Connector is different but the signal to ECU seems the same, G-, G and Ne signal.

There are two redtops - Bigport and Smallport.

Bigport redtop uses essentially the same signals as Bluetop - 24 teeth NE wheel and 4 teeth G wheel (with one sensor).

Smallport on the other hand uses 24 teeth NE wheel and 1 tooth G wheel with two sensors - G1 and G2.

Yep, the bigport redtop distributor works just fine on a bluetop. I've got one on my car and just swapped the plugs to fit it on the engine.

Do note, however, that you must use the correct cap for the distributor - an AE86 cap doesn't fit at all and AE82 one fits upside down. Even with what I believed was the correct cap (leads exit at a V-angle, two on each side), the timing was 180 degrees off from the numbers marked on the cap and I had to change the order of the leads to make the engine run. I may have had a wrong type of rotor, though.

And like Bad Dog said, the smallport distributor with the triangle-shaped connector is completely different and not useful at all unless you also use a smallport ECU (among other things).
