The unit the ignitor sits on = the ignition coil if I'm not mistaken. It should have a permanent connection to +12V on one end(+), and the signal wire on the other(-).
So that would mean you need to have 12 volts on the + pole of the coil when the ignition is turned on.

(the way it works is that the signal wire pulls the - pole to 0 volts, causing a current to flow through the coil from + to -, which in turn creates a current in the main coil, much like any AC transformator)
