Although it might be considered a REALLY BIG SHOW.... in reality, it's my first race head... fitted with oversize(Atlantic size) valves.

A few facts for those who like their numbers....

bore = 3.2680"
stroke = 3.0315"
Deck = .025"
gasket = .020"
piston volume = 9.5cc

So... for those who like to do this kind of math......what will his compression be with 36.25cc chambers? What will his compression be with 39.5cc chambers?

yes you are VERY right......


13.7 would be massive, and since I was asked to supply a cylinder head with a desired static CR of 12.5 to 1, I'll need to "open up" this heads combustion chambers from a stock volume of 36.25, to a quite large 39.5cc.

The areas of enlargement are well outlined in black marker.

I've done this procedure once before.....

Yes... I'm told Kelford 193HV-B. 300 max duration, 10.5mm maximum lift

A few facts.... this is the first head I've worked on that was previously worked on by another person. The head's owner asked me if I could accept this condition, and I agreed. I told the head's owner that I'd do what I know to work - based on my previous experience.


Before I get to working on the chambers, I decided to begin working the intake ports. The bowls (from the splitter on back) will be worked on after the O/S valves are installed - so for the sake of this posting, I'm talking about the port from the splitter to the manifold mounting flange


Below is intake port #3... in all photos... if you doubt it, just look @ the guides.

Remembering that this is an O/S valve head, I need as much room within the gasket as I dare.

It's not only the outer gasket surface matched, but the entire port has been pushed nearly all the way to the gaskets size :eek: :eek:

A slightly different perspective on the same 2 ports, this time from a more revealing angle

apologies for the less than perfect view of the crappy port, especially as the ported view is pretty clear... What can be discerned is the untouched port (right) has an amorphous blob in the lower right of the port, not seen(now removed) in the much clearer view of the ported port. Also note gasket fitment, the right hand port will give up about 1.5mm at the gaskets surface, but the interior gives up even more. The cross width of a standard smallport is about 44-46mm, the cross width of these ports is now between 48mm, and 48.25mm


The 4 intake ports are now mostly to size, there will be some changes as they are additionally blended after the O/S seats are installed

Before and semi-after. Well, as semi-after as I go before the O/S valves are fitted. The tops of the ports are now where they need to be for flowing the kind of volume Atlantic valves flow. Once the O/S valves are fitted I'll push out the bowls to meet the new seats. It will be at that time that the remainder of the port work will occur... in essence the lower portion of the ports will get worked @ that time.

Did a bit of clean up.... usually this is the amount of material I remove from the entire head.... this time... just the intakes ports :eek:
