My experience: skip the calculations and just make it as big as possible. I've done hand calcs, ran simulations on CFD programs coupled to engine simulating software etc. The influence of runner length is pretty accurate, but plenum volume just gets lost in the noise. And that was on a pretty straightforward single cylinder engine..never mind 4 cyls.
The installed effect really needs to be measured. We made a nifty little variable volume plenum and determined the volume where an increase in volume did not increase VE.
A far bigger influence was the design of the plenum and ancillaries themselves! Smoothnes, radius etc etc.

A pedal to steer the rear

I try to go as big as sensible - regarding design that's why I try to draw something up... I tend to go with ~90mm stacks - if I mount them complete inside the plenum that will leave quite a big volume underneath them which I'm not certain on the effect it'll have.

small update: it's far from how I want it to be as I only start to get my head around the CAD programm - don't have the one I was used to (unigraphics) so need some more practice...[Image: AEU86 AE86 - Bean Bandits Levin 'Globetrotter']

little preview on how I want it to be... just a ruf scetch (the stacks will be 90mm)
the base picture is of the airbox of my mates hillclimbcar (~230hp and more than just huge)

Here are some other designs to consider. This is Noby-Booth CFRP airbox

I like how this Mikaru one opens via a panel rather then removing the entire airbox.

cheers for the input, they both look nice...
my final product will be similar to the Mikaru one but bigger (my car is LHD so more space available) - also both boxes seem to use very small stacks... I'll be fitting 90mm stack inside my box so it already needs to be considerably bigger.
I'll be designing the final solution on the car to max out the usable space - the model is just a guideline and I had fun working with a CAD programm again.

It'll be two piece aswell, one bolting to the ITBs along with the stacks and the other as cover with the intake for the filter - this way I'll be able to test the difference between open stacks and the closed box Smile

next week I'll be fitting the rad and some more stuff if I progress quickly enough.
