His work on the rear chassis rails? He certainly leaves no stone unturned

One piece made with a little help from the belt sander.... Happy with the fit-up for mig, but I don't think I could tig it... BTW finally got my tig welder set-up. It's a Rohr 160 with if start. I'd never tig'd before today but managed to get the arc going a good few times and only stuck twice.
I've had conflicting advise re tig welding for car body work but I suppose you never really know until you experiment yourself.

I've still got to fabricate the base of the strut tower but it's in 1.0mm steel which I'm out of so I've got some on order[Image: AEU86 AE86 - AE86 booter][Image: AEU86 AE86 - AE86 booter]

For TIG to work on thin bodywork you need to have silly accurate panel fitup.. Any gaps and it gets ugly fast.
It's also more sensitive to contamination so you need to clean both sides as well (not always easy).
Takes forever too. Im no TIG expert, just had a go at welding my brothers miata quarter panels in with one, and I kind of
think I would have done as good of a job with the MIG in half the time.
Anyhoo, looking neat..
Is this 0.8mm plate? I've always just used 1mm for ease of welding, but the thinner stuff is really easy to form into shape.

Yea I've just managed to get my tig set up with a bottle of pure argon. I've had a Rohr 160 since July and have been itching to try it out .... [Image: AEU86 AE86 - AE86 booter]

I know where you're coming from, it's prone to burning through but the grinding time is much reduced and distortion was minimal. I was also pleasantly surprised by the strength of the weld... I've been reading 'Welding for vehicle restorers' by Bruce McCloed for inspiration

...I don't know about welding old corroded metal though. Anyway yes it's thin metal, 0.7 or 0.8, the strut tower itself is 1.0mm but it's fairly straight

Do yourself a favor and watch this TIG education video:
You can a lot better TIG welds, if you practice a bit more Angel

Otherwise nice work Hurray!

I know the pic is not great, but it shows what I thought was quite a good repair by previous person[Image: AEU86 AE86 - AE86 booter]

This is what it looked like from the other side.... Lap weld with original rotten tin behind[Image: AEU86 AE86 - AE86 booter]

I cut it out quite close to the weld to preserve as much of the original metal as possible and ended up blowing through so much that I decided to start again...[Image: AEU86 AE86 - AE86 booter]

Nearly there...all these little things that I came across while installing the patch for the floor. Every time I look at that repair section I realise more and more how ambitious it is

I got some zirconia abrasives for my 10mm belt sander and has made SUCH a difference: sands down welds in record time! I've primed everything in weld-thru zinc primer to preserve it until I'm done with the welding. After that I've got some 2pk epoxy primer in aerosol to seal the front clip. I intend spraying all but the outer panels myself[Image: AEU86 AE86 - AE86 booter][Image: AEU86 AE86 - AE86 booter]

....and from the inside. Welds yet to be dressed. I had originally welded one spot at a time but plagued by pinholes, I decided to stitch-weld from the other side, 4-5 spots at a time[Image: AEU86 AE86 - AE86 booter]
