AE86 booter
Hi folks. I bought this as an abandoned project as it was a big birthday this year and I've wanted one of these for years having owned a few back when anyone could afford them as a second car

What I got is: stripped shell, good bootlid, rough doors and one wing ok, the other very rough. All glass bar front screen. Interior is poor and missing front seats. Axle casing, prop, t50, 2 front subframes, front coilovers, engine block (7 rib) and 16v head.... Both questionable.

My plan is for a restomod(?) ...road/track car. I aim to complete 80,% of the work myself. So far I've built a shop-trolley and a rotisserie and bought a few bits (full OEM axle, xxr rims, fender flares bumpers, good doors and a decent wing.
Also got 6 point bolt-in cage and 2 buckets requiring a refurb[Image: AEU86 AE86 - AE86 booter][Image: AEU86 AE86 - AE86 booter][Image: AEU86 AE86 - AE86 booter][Image: AEU86 AE86 - AE86 booter]

Started work on the biggest hole.... actually, someone else started it, and left it. Bought a 2nd had firewall for a repair section... It's a bit scaly to, so I ended up putting a patch into it first

Then I noticed that the lhs had an outrigger underneath but there was none on this side. Had a rummage through the bits that came with it and found it in a poor state so I made a copy[Image: AEU86 AE86 - AE86 booter][Image: AEU86 AE86 - AE86 booter][Image: AEU86 AE86 - AE86 booter][Image: AEU86 AE86 - AE86 booter][Image: AEU86 AE86 - AE86 booter][Image: AEU86 AE86 - AE86 booter]

Made a repair section for the floor.... The original was already cut away and parts replaced by some metal sheet (with yellow/black graphics on?!)
I'm fairly happy with it, but further investigation shows the inner sill cracked and very weak along the bottom. Also front pocket had a patch that looked great on the outside (tho it had a skim of filler over it) but when opened up revealed the original rusty metal languishing underneath, so that's another repair section required...[Image: AEU86 AE86 - AE86 booter][Image: AEU86 AE86 - AE86 booter][Image: AEU86 AE86 - AE86 booter][Image: AEU86 AE86 - AE86 booter][Image: AEU86 AE86 - AE86 booter][Image: AEU86 AE86 - AE86 booter][Image: AEU86 AE86 - AE86 booter][Image: AEU86 AE86 - AE86 booter]

Im having a serious deja-vu moment here. Your panel beating skills look to be a notch above mine.
Feels great when those rotten patches have fresh solid steel put back in them though, doesnt it?
Also love those huge CBY style flares I spotted. I didnt have the heart to cut up my fenders to use
something similar myself.

That old repair looks manky.. Welding panels in with a huge overlap open to the elements.. might as
well not have bothered with a repair at all.

I'll take the compliment thanks Ivan, but I took inspiration from your own work - I think there's a log of it on retro-rides? Your undoubtedly a brave man cutting out where others would fear to tread....

The flares? One of the rear arches has a repair which has rusted through (see pics to follow) and the wing I've bought has been rolled so it sorta makes sense. I'll prolly try repairing the rear first and if that fails I'll stick them straight on

Pics show examples of the two looks I like ... My she'll was originally red over black, or "Angry Panda" lol...but I do like the subtle lines of all white cars with black bumpers. I'm as yet undecided[Image: AEU86 AE86 - AE86 booter][Image: AEU86 AE86 - AE86 booter][Image: AEU86 AE86 - AE86 booter]

A few more repairs to the front lamp panel and the lip on the leading edge of the inner wing was missing - handily there were some cuts from a blue '86 included so I cut a repair panel out of that. The front panel was blue also and had holes cut in it, possibly for intercooler piping.... I remember the seller telling me that there was an afm off a 4agze there[Image: AEU86 AE86 - AE86 booter][Image: AEU86 AE86 - AE86 booter][Image: AEU86 AE86 - AE86 booter][Image: AEU86 AE86 - AE86 booter]

I get a deja-vu seeing that footwell... My old AE86 was patched up as well, but a leaky master clutch cylinder made sure the paint got stripped and the moisture did the rest! Big Grin

Yep, even apart from that, the material is so thin, and seam-sealing was scarce, it's a wonder so many have survived

A little more done with this evening when I got home from work....a bit ambitious maybe but it won't be seen once the wing is on: the repair section for the front pocket[Image: AEU86 AE86 - AE86 booter][Image: AEU86 AE86 - AE86 booter]

Ok, wasn't sure about that last repair section as the original is more squared off....so I tried again, this time cutting a relief out and welding it together...

...if nothing else it made me realise how much practice I need at welding[Image: AEU86 AE86 - AE86 booter][Image: AEU86 AE86 - AE86 booter]

It looks like a nice fit to me, but I personally don't have much skills in panel beating and welding.
Are you going to reinforce the bottom part of this section as, if I'm not mistaken, that's also where the jack points are?

My plan is to replace corroded metal first and then add strengthening mods and seam/stitch welds.....but as regards the jacking points, the plate for the a-pillar bar of the cage will be here so I could incorporate something with that...but cheers, I hadn't given it much thought :0
