Well I decided one day that the ultimate AE86 to own would be a TRDn2 car, as there doesnt appear to be alot of these floating about I figured I would have to build my own !
AE86 : Projects > nzae86s TRD ae86 N2 Race Car Project 2

I have studied the TRD manual for some time and came to the idea that one of these should be easy to build , the only thing I was going to need was a huge pile of money! Stupid

I happen to have a good shell that looked like it needed a purpose in life so that is where I began.
AE86 : Projects > nzae86s TRD ae86 N2 Race Car Project 2
After stripping the car and removing everything from inside, I started on yet another cage

AE86 : Projects > nzae86s TRD ae86 N2 Race Car Project 2

AE86 : Projects > nzae86s TRD ae86 N2 Race Car Project 2
As the car is having the N2 fenders there is a lot of work in cutting and reshaping the rear wheel arches to make all this happen, this is where the body shell is at the moment so when I take some more photos I will come back to the body shell

Probably the most difficult part of building one of these cars to the correct specs is the engine. I managed to find a engine from a formula Atlantic swift DB4 so there can be no doubt if this engine is "atlantic spec" or the real deal.
Stripping the engine down and starting from the begining is the only way to go .I bought new TRD pistons that I found had been sitting on a shelf with another set for over 10 years .The steel billet crank is shown in this picture along side a standard smallport , supercharged,20v, crank
AE86 : Projects > nzae86s TRD ae86 N2 Race Car Project 2

The rods are TRD , and I bought another dry sump set up that is more suited to RWD ,it is a TRD sump with a Barnes pump
AE86 : Projects > nzae86s TRD ae86 N2 Race Car Project 2

This is the bottom end mocked up to make sure everything fits
AE86 : Projects > nzae86s TRD ae86 N2 Race Car Project 2
My engine builder was not happy with the size of the oil pump belt so the front pulley setup is in for a change, the atlantic cars never ran an altenator so all this needs a rethink

The early Atlantic engines used carbs so did the N2 cars so the head and carbs were stripped down crack tested, rebuilt and put back together again
AE86 : Projects > nzae86s TRD ae86 N2 Race Car Project 2

The inlet and exhaust cams are both 320 deg with 10.6mm lift TRD #881

AE86 : Projects > nzae86s TRD ae86 N2 Race Car Project 2

The Atlantic flywheel is to small to run a sedan type car so I had one made from high tensile billet, looks a bit like a steering wheel
AE86 : Projects > nzae86s TRD ae86 N2 Race Car Project 2

The clutch is a twin plate Quartermaster 71/4 inch

Well after some time and careful design by my engine builder it is all together and waiting for me to finish the rest of the car

I hope it goes as well as it looks !!!

The good thing about building one of these cars is that alot of very expensive development had been done by TRD, so using the information that they had it is easy to find what these cars need to work .
AE86 : Projects > nzae86s TRD ae86 N2 Race Car Project 2

these shocks have been taken from the N2 manual
AE86 : Projects > nzae86s TRD ae86 N2 Race Car Project 2

I have fitted a coilover set up as TRD ran with a spring rate from the middle of the range to start with
AE86 : Projects > nzae86s TRD ae86 N2 Race Car Project 2

And the finished strut with Tein strut tops
AE86 : Projects > nzae86s TRD ae86 N2 Race Car Project 2

Some front caster rods will match well with the TRD front and rear swaybars

The gear kit is the same as what I use in my tarmac rally car but this one will be combined with a TRD 5.3 crown wheel and pinion and a TRD 2 way LSD
AE86 : Projects > nzae86s TRD ae86 N2 Race Car Project 2

These cars also ran a diff pump and cooler so that is what this will have
AE86 : Projects > nzae86s TRD ae86 N2 Race Car Project 2

AE86 : Projects > nzae86s TRD ae86 N2 Race Car Project 2

As TRD do not make a gearbox mount any more I managed to get a cusco item and engine mounts

What I thought was going to be one of the hardest thing to find for this project was one of the easiest and cheapest !

The wheels came on a Datsun 280Z that I bought just for the wheels , but I managed to sell the car for more than I paid with some steel wheels on it !
AE86 : Projects > nzae86s TRD ae86 N2 Race Car Project 2

The fronts are 15 x 8.5 and the rears are 15 x 9 SSR

These photos show the extent that the rear wheel arch needs to be removed to fit the N2 body kit , the outer is cut up and the inner wheel arch is then folded out and welded together , all this is as per TRD's instructions in the N2 manual
AE86 : Projects > nzae86s TRD ae86 N2 Race Car Project 2
This allows for large wheel offset and being able to have the car set very low

AE86 : Projects > nzae86s TRD ae86 N2 Race Car Project 2

AE86 : Projects > nzae86s TRD ae86 N2 Race Car Project 2

The back floor has been reshaped to take the new fuel cell , which will be mounted more to the left (RHD car) to get a better balance to the car when full of fuel,
AE86 : Projects > nzae86s TRD ae86 N2 Race Car Project 2
AE86 : Projects > nzae86s TRD ae86 N2 Race Car Project 2

the area on the right hand side of the tank will house the fuel surge tank , pumps and filters , with also enough room to take the diff pump as well

Why are the camcovers so high on front, is there something underneath which needs that space?

Nice project can't wait to see and hear it when it's finished. How much power do you think the engine will make? This should be heading past the 200 mark right Blonde question

nzae86, you've mentioned TRD N2 manual several times. It's the same as TRD Levin Trueno Bible? If not, would it be possible to get a copy of it somehow?
