I've just completed the best modification so far to my '86
Quaife close ratio Ford type 9 gearbox with a TRD clutch, it's fantastic
The car seems to come alive with a close ratio gearbox. It really suits the power output of even a standard 4AGE
Strangely it's not a very common mod though....

Scary yes, but probably less than a 20v conversion. I think it gives a comparable increase in performance.
The noise is unbelievable, she wails like a banshee now
OK though, 'cause it's a rally car !

Iīve heard that.
Its a shame that a close gear ratio set is so damn expensive.

Yes the T50 Toyota gearset is very expensive and rare but a used Ford Type 9 is not too bad price wise and fairly common. I think a complete conversion could be done for around 1200 euros.
Here are a few money saving tips:
Find a used Type 9 CR (Quaife or Tranex) on that auction site. (600)
Use a standard AE86 clutch cover and a MGB clutch plate. (50)
Modify standard gearbox mount, easily done (20)
Modify standard release (throwout) bearing, just bore it out to fit Type 9 shaft (20)
Modify front half of propshaft to fit Ford output shaft (100)
Get Raw engineering bellhousing and spigot bearing (300)
Put it all together
Numbers in brackets are approximate prices in Euros, my computer does'nt have a Euro key !!!

It is also my best modification as well. I have TRD close ratio gearset in my T50 gearbox. It works really well with my 4agze. I love the long first gear it let me take advantage of the torque from the supercharger. I can almost do 80km/h in first! snap into second and there is hardly any drop in rpm and you just continue to accelerate oh yeah and the noise is cool too

Why not just go for a pinion and drive set?

The hunk of aluminum is $170.00 the CC time was about $1000 (first run no program). There are some necessary minor machine work the box still needs... but the case for all essential purposes is done......
I expect more soon.....
