|
|
A friend with a 20V in his AE86, "killed" his clutch.
He asked me, I take a look here, I see no sticky, I say thats a chance...
Ok, lets make this a sticky for CLUTCES
What types of clutch (and brands) can be used in a normal AE86 with 4age?
What types of clutch (and brands) can be used in a modified AE with 4age?
What types of clutch (and brands) can be used in a modified AE with 4agZe?
And in more hurry, What types of clutch (and brands) can be used in a modified AE86 with 20V ITB?

Well, there is a maximum size flywheel that will fit the t5 Bellhousing, and that is really the only limiting factor (along with the number of flywheel bolts maybe). I know for a fact that ae92 flywheels will fit, they are a little bit bigger on late model ae92 gti's (with 7-rib 4age).
A 20v on a t5 gearbox will most likely be using the stock bellhousing, so you're stuck to a certain maximum clutch diameter.
I dont know anything about most racing clutches, and have no experience with them myself. But from what almost everyone on club4ag is saying, the Illegal Garage clutches (sold by Max Misawa) are the best option for street performance and drifting. Those are very strong clutches that survive clutch kicks better then most other clutches, and are not to difficult to drive with. You get a complete set with pressure plate, bearing and install tool.
Max can tell you exactly what will fit your engine and requirements, or even make something custom for you.
Senna from this forum has one in his car right now, and I have bought other stuff from him before so you know he's trustworthy.

I heard somewere that you can coat your old clutch plate with new friction material which also has a higher friction coefficient (right?).
Anyone ever heard of this?Maybe interesting for mild tuning?

1983 - 1987 AE86 --- 1987 (A) - 1990 AE92 GTi
have the same flywheel with 200mm clutchplate
1990 (B) - 1992 --- AE92 GTi has 212mm clutchplate with different flywheel.
I use an AE92 GTi -88 stock clutchplate with an TRD preassureplate right now

you can use a 200mm clutch or 212mm clutch for the AE86 RWD T50 transmission
yes you can "coat" you clutch disk, its called rebuilding the clutch disk
you have to be very good at this to make it work properly
you guys are welcome to e-mail any time if you have any questions
(please no pm's)
My builder has built all types of clutches from roller coaster rides to million dollar classic indianapolis race cars (muesium type stuff)

i have a 1984 model trueno
have fitted to the car a Helix Cerametalic paddle clutch
as my car is a 1984 it has the 200mm flywheel
to use this clutch i needed the 212mm flywheel
it is a straight swap take the old flywheel out drop new one in
the clutch feels real good, there is a little bite despite being a paddle clutch

I will be installing a Cusco clutch kit on saturday.
I'll post the feedback about it in this thread - It's a 3-piece kit with Cusco 5kg Flywheel, Pressure plate and Cusco "Copper Type" clutch plate.
http://www.perfectrun.com.au/real_size_image/dr...avydutyclutch.htm
Has anybody here ever installed one of these kits?
If so, is there is anything special that needs to looked out for when installing these types of kits?
I'm pretty sure it should be standard procedure, just asking to be sure that it works out well in the end.

Hey Max,
Thats a bit borderline dude, no commercial advertising in the normal sections on the board
Besides, a few posts up Ivan already plugged your product when you wasn't a member here yet
That said, redeem yourself by posting some objective info about those special clutches you do sell. I've heard a lot of nice things about them and since I'll be needed a new clutch someday soon.. If you keep it to the facts it will be a benefit to this thread.

Hey Max,
I'm no clutch expert so I have no idea. What I would like to know is more about is application and driveability. I've driven cars with pure race clutches and I would hate to have that on my dialy driver and sit in a 1 hour traffic jam. These where real "on/off" clutches, the ones that really are designed to rocket you away from the get go, and never stop until the race is over:) (or maybe they weren't installed properly <grin> )
But I also drove CFs car the other day that had an uprated clutch that I really enjoyed and was way better then my clutch that I give a max of half a year of life left in it (its not slipping yet with normal driving, but thats where it ends:), all though its been like that for a year now so maybe its just supposed to feel this way and its just a soooooft clutch).
So the sortof info I'm after is what can I expect when I drive my car. Is this a clutch that you'd sell to your every day hachi roku driver that just wants a better clutch for his daily driver, is it meant for people that use their cars mostly on the track or with drifting, is it somewhere in between (like for me, dialy used car going to the track once a month).

this clutch is fine for the street
even your pop pop or gandma would be able to drive the car
(the pedal feel is same as stock)
then 10 mins later you could take it to the track and trash the tires like a mad man
how long the clutch will last depends a lot on your driving style
i would say if it was a track only car
look to get about 60 track days out of one clutch

Update:
Installed the Cusco Copper Single Clutch kit about 2 weeks ago.
Well, it's great.
Took around 2-3 days to bed in completely. At first it had a vicious bite, the clutch pedal had to be operated really really smoothly.
By now, it give, imho, a perfect combination of hard clutch operation combined with smooth daily driveability.
The kit consists of Heavy Duty Clutch cover, copper single clutch plate and Cusco lightweight flywheel. (5kg i think)
Pressing down the clutch pedal is about 30% harder than before, so it's still really nice to use in traffic. The clutch has a smooth friction point, and is easy to operate. But still, it kicks in hard after a launch, or a clutch kick. It also does not tend to overheat when used hard repeatedly.
So I can fully recommend this kit, though probably this is the case for most clutch kits from good manufacturers.
In the end it cost me 560 EUR or so including shipping from japan to swiss, and including Customs.

ive got a turbo`d 4age with the t50 in it at the min. the car is putting out 210 torque and it will slip the clutch at 4000rpm if i floor it. ive just got a 1ggte 5w8 box and when i change it i obviuosly need to change the clutch. is there any off the shelf clutches to take this kinda torque? i dont wanna go down the twin plate style, just rather have a single plate. dont mind if its a paddle as long as its not too race style, the car is used a lot n the roads as well as the track. any ideas?

If you talk about W58 box - search around 4AGZE from MR2. Look at their flywheel/clutch combos
PS: I will recommend ACT brand of clutches.

The 225mm clutch from the GZE engine, can not be installed on the bellhouse
You can only use the 212mm !
I have not found any info on a clutch that can be used , other then the one from Max, if you tell him it needs to be made for the w5x gearbox.
i had around 350nm on one of thoose clutches, without problems, other then a broken gearbox(t50).

Denmark, Holli must use 4A-->W58 custom bellhousing. So this is not an issue. I read in that past that 4AGZE friction disc will fit on the W58 spline (but this must be confirmed).

There is still only the bellhouse from NZ that will hold the Gze clutch, and you even have to modify it!
So it will be a issue

there are of the shelf clutches that fit for the box and are 212mm dia. and i already have the ze flywheel on. is there any way of modifying the 1ggte bellhousing to fit a 4age engine, even if a little alu welding is needed?

Maybe adapter plate between the bellhousing and T50 ?
Measure length of T50's (primary) shaft also with bellhousing "attached" to T50.

im not sure. when my brother did the swap, he went up to this place in Belfast that only do clutches and they had one 212mm on the correct splines. i may be confused though and they had 212 plates and changed the spline. ill ask him and find out, it would be so much easier if i was back home.

Today's update:
Some Peugeot clutches use the same splines and are 230mm diameter. If someone uses custom fluwheel - they can fit (in fact I measured 212mm flywheel and there is enough place for 230mm work area).
The clutch used in this experiment was Peugeot 605 2.0 8V turbo one, the Peugeot owner said that Peugeot 405 T16 use the same.
