In the US an AE86 is SR5 SOHC and the AE88 is GTs I think Smile

Correct, certain countries like Australia got ae86 with a 4ac, makes you wonder what th point of an ae85 was?

An 86 is for Life, not just for Christmas

Whilst you could fit a 16v 4AGE you'll need all the bits that go with it, ECU loom etc.

If you have drums on the rear chances are you won't have an LSD as LSD wouldn't come with this axle.

Again you can change to AE86 running gear, you just need to find all the parts so you will likely need engine, gearbox, axle etc, so replace the lot. Not sure if the props or not are different.

AE85 uses 3AC

If it has a 4A in it(4AC, or 4AGEC, or 4AGE) it is an AE86. AE88(4AGE equipped) is part of the vin, but the chassis is still an AE86

rear brakes have nothing to do with chassis code

Well according to the Toyota EPC Nort America never had the AE85 named frame - just AE86 in three models DX, SR5 and GTS

I guess your model code (that's the important thing) is AE86L-ESMXCA

which means a US SR5 model with 2 doors, 5 shift manual transmission and a 4AC engine

if the S in the code is a C it reffers to the 3 door model

all found in the EPC or here online http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/g_U_1985_TO...SMXCA.html

Wink

The model code is the most specific one and pending on that things like brakes, AC, servo, etc differ - that's also where the difference in the European versions is regarding the engine variations with different CR Pistons, emission add-ons and so forth.
