Btw, fiberglas have another advantage other than wheight; they doesnt rust. And nomatter how well old metalfenders are fixed, they will begin to rust again. Crying
That was my original reason for going fiberglas..

One of these days I want to strip a hachi to bare metal, dip it into acid and then get it electricaly coated, probably zink coated...

But thats far future when I've won the loterySmile

Yes I think we all want to do that. And I think very few of us have actually won the lottery..

I know of a few who do yes.

In Hillegom there is a company specialised in doing a shell like this. Not completely comparable but also for DeLoreans the double Y-frames are cleaned up and zink coated like this.

Based on the prices for coating the DeLorean frame's I'm guess total costs will be over 5000 euro's for doing a complete hachiSmile

@EE80, take a good look at the website. Especially the part where they tell you that you have to prime the part within one week of the treatment because it becomes susceptible to fly-rust..Its just a way of stripping paint of a shell. It also does this in areas that you might not be able to reach with paint afterwards..so proceed with caution. It does provide a nice clean surface to apply more traditional techniques to though.

Regarding de dipping of an entire shell in a Zinc bath..I still believe that this will make the end result look like a corkscrew. ONLY if the original shell was designed to be dipped will this be possible. Most older cars (like the hachi) aren't...

That company that ee80 mentioned also does some kind of electrolytic ccoating process if you want them to.. that way the entire car is uniformly coated with a protective layer (0,4u thick, so not too drastic). It's not exactly anodising but something similar. If someone has enough money to throw around on chemically stripping and acid dipping, then that person can surely afford to have it coated as well.

And they give this link to a dutch article about that coating:

BTW the cars that are shown on the site aren't exotics so you wouldn't have to be like incredibly rich to have this done... Just much more rich then I am (we are...)

Why would it come out as a corkscrew? The Y-frames for the DeLorean weren't designed for it and they come out looking great..

Mux, you answered your own question: slightly further down the piece you quoted:

I dont see why anodising would add that much heat to a part...the currents from electrolysis arent that big I should think, and big bodyparts suspended in a body of fluid form a more than ideal heatsink.
