I have put a AE92 front part in to AE86 rear part. They will fit together.
Whole pump assy is different from the rear.

Here is a AE92 water pump

and here is AE86 water pump with AE92 front part

Oh, I almoust forgot. Front parts has different lenght. AE92 front is couple of mm shorter, so if you use a AE92 front part with RWD pulleys, you need spacer.

I found that the water pump I have is from an AE82 and slightly shorter than the AE86 pump. My brother is a wizard with the lathe and made a small spacer plate to align the pump pulley with the other two;

All the pulleys now line up nicely;

If you use an AE92 pulley you wont need a spacer to make it line up.
The main reason that the AE86 pump is longer is that it has a bigger bearing. Probably designed this way because the AE86 has a mechanical fan attached to it..this increases the stress on the bearing. I have been using an ae92 pump for a long time with no problems, but I've seen pictures of pumps where the front had broken off completely, so it's up to you if you want to use one or not.
