Clutch types for AE86
A friend with a 20V in his AE86, "killed" his clutch.
He asked me, I take a look here, I see no sticky, I say thats a chance...

Ok, lets make this a sticky for CLUTCES

What types of clutch (and brands) can be used in a normal AE86 with 4age?

What types of clutch (and brands) can be used in a modified AE with 4age?

What types of clutch (and brands) can be used in a modified AE with 4agZe?

And in more hurry, What types of clutch (and brands) can be used in a modified AE86 with 20V ITB?

Well, there is a maximum size flywheel that will fit the t5 Bellhousing, and that is really the only limiting factor (along with the number of flywheel bolts maybe). I know for a fact that ae92 flywheels will fit, they are a little bit bigger on late model ae92 gti's (with 7-rib 4age).

A 20v on a t5 gearbox will most likely be using the stock bellhousing, so you're stuck to a certain maximum clutch diameter.

I dont know anything about most racing clutches, and have no experience with them myself. But from what almost everyone on club4ag is saying, the Illegal Garage clutches (sold by Max Misawa) are the best option for street performance and drifting. Those are very strong clutches that survive clutch kicks better then most other clutches, and are not to difficult to drive with. You get a complete set with pressure plate, bearing and install tool.
Max can tell you exactly what will fit your engine and requirements, or even make something custom for you.
Senna from this forum has one in his car right now, and I have bought other stuff from him before so you know he's trustworthy.

I heard somewere that you can coat your old clutch plate with new friction material which also has a higher friction coefficient (right?).

Anyone ever heard of this?Maybe interesting for mild tuning?

1983 - 1987 AE86 --- 1987 (A) - 1990 AE92 GTi

have the same flywheel with 200mm clutchplate

1990 (B) - 1992 --- AE92 GTi has 212mm clutchplate with different flywheel.

I use an AE92 GTi -88 stock clutchplate with an TRD preassureplate right now

yes you can "coat" you clutch disk, its called rebuilding the clutch disk

you have to be very good at this to make it work properly

i have a 1984 model trueno

have fitted to the car a Helix Cerametalic paddle clutch

as my car is a 1984 it has the 200mm flywheel

to use this clutch i needed the 212mm flywheel

it is a straight swap take the old flywheel out drop new one in

the clutch feels real good, there is a little bite despite being a paddle clutch

I will be installing a Cusco clutch kit on saturday.

I'll post the feedback about it in this thread - It's a 3-piece kit with Cusco 5kg Flywheel, Pressure plate and Cusco "Copper Type" clutch plate.

http://www.perfectrun.com.au/real_size_i...clutch.htm

Has anybody here ever installed one of these kits?

If so, is there is anything special that needs to looked out for when installing these types of kits?

I'm pretty sure it should be standard procedure, just asking to be sure that it works out well in the end. Wink
