Cam timing help
ok so i picked up a nice set of HKS 304/304 8.35mm lift cams. so i was reading bill sheerwoods page on cams, and he says that that size of cam should have a lobe center of around 100-100.

then goes onto explain that if i were to rotate the motor 100 degree clockwise i should see the intake cam be fully opened up. same for exhuast 100 degree counter clockwise exhuast be opened.

alright so lets say i do that and my intake isnt fully open. would i then just go back to TDC and then adjust the cam gear a bit(i have fully adjustable gears) and then again rotate 100 degree and see?

or is it harder then what it seems?

YES Smile Or when you are at 100 degrees, adjust the camshaft to obtain
maximum lift (the result is the same). Keep in mind that the camshaft
will have several degrees of "dwell" at maximum lift (the camshaft will
rotate with no change in lift). Try and put the lobe in the centre of this
no more lift angle of rotation.

There is a more accurate method of setting the cam separation, which
involves finding the point of 0.050" opening on each flank, and dividing
by two to obtain the centreline. But if you are planning to play around
with lobe separation, your method will be fine Smile

Cam timing help
Only mildly off-topic Smile

Does anyone know the lobe separation for the standard OEM cams
in the late AE92 "smallport" 16V 4AGE ?? All I can find by searching
is that it will be somewhere between 100-100 and 110-110 Confused

I have adjustable pulleys without any markings, and I would like to
be able to degree the cams to obtain the correct factory timing as a
baseline. Then when I install my new cams I can degree them to the
same settings to obtain a performance comparison.

On Club4AGE there is a listing of 111-111 for stock cams on the
cam comparison page. But then there is a rather contradictory
statement about finding good power at 100-100 Huh

So if anyone has experimented with lobe separations on their OEM
cams, I would like to know what settins you have used.

Cam timing help
Good stuff Oldeskewl Smile

I had a bit of a struggle to read the numbers, so I have reposted
your info with my best guess figures shown below the std cam. Feel
free to correct anything I have figured wrong.

And since the numbers give 232 duration, they are the smallport
numbers I was looking for. Now I have some work to do Smile
