Dave,

I'm purely guessing here, but people like Royalmatt here, Rasterinho, S.K. and Apardal, who all have completely taken there car appart and build it from the ground up, usually spend anything starting from 5.000 USD excluding the car to figures I don't dare name.

Though there is a big difference on how you do it, when you look at Royalmatt here who's doing everything himself in his own garage, that means he only pays materials. Good paint will set you back anywhere between 500 USD and 1000 USD (but remember that to get good results, you need atleast some experience in body work and spray painting). A good professional paint job starts at 2000 or 3000 USD when YOU bring the car completely prepped to the painters, so you've already spend hours and hours welding the body and sanding it down.

Stealing a little bit from Royalmatt's great build thread, this is what I have to say...

ddldave, start buying tools, and read the toyota service manual. Whenever the manual states SST - special service tool, grab a hammer (LOL).

I started disassembling my car without any kind of expertise in the area, and you start learning for trial and error mostly. But anyways, having tools and manual will give you a good jumpstart.

Figures that Mux doesn't dare saying rise up to 20000USD (only painted the car in a shop, the rest I did it myself), and the engine is only mildly prepped.

Good luck.

Well I just have to comment on this as well Smile 5000 USD isn't going to build you a car like this, Apardal's or mine for that matter unless its in good shape when you pic it up... If you really want to build a nice car I'd say it starts at about 10k USD and more hours than you would care to count... Its still worth it btw Thumbs up!

Good job, Royalmatt BTW Cool I can't wait to see it all done!!!

Short story:

I got my 86 back in 2001. At that time I was a student and didn't have a lot of money. So I took good care of it so I could run it without spending too much. I graduated 2005 but kept on living like I used to after getting a normal job. That way I had enough money to do the rebuild in two years... Cool
