AE86 engine harness help ..
Ok I need a stock, uncut engine wiring harness for my AE86.

My car currently has a Zenki set up (3 yellow diagnostic ports) and to save any fuss I want another one to replace the chopped up shit the japanese fitted to my car.

Thing is I cant find one, however the Kouki loom (1 black diagnostic port) seems pretty common and I have the possibility of 2.

Is there a way to get a Kouki engine harness to work with a Zenki setup or is it a case of bodging wires etc.

Can anyone advise what wires / feeds go to the connector on the rear of the engine bay? RPM / temp / oil pressure etc?

Alternativley do I also need the Kouki underdash harness to get everything to work properly?

I have literally got to the end with this car and the stupid parts for it which are stupidly difficult to come by. Quite seriously if I cant get it running properly in the next month or so I will walk away from it or break it.

sorry to hear that, but dont give up on the car.

I dont know the answer to that, If you give me some time i'll test with a zenki loom i have in my kouki.

I have 2 zenki looms for sale, LEVIN model.

Hi Jonny,

I presume on the late spec loom the under dash section of the harness is different to the early harness.

Do you have a a late spec under dash harness spare?

If I dont get to use this car this year for a track day I will either moth ball it and walk away from it for a year or so or sell / break it.

Its make or break time now, car has just given me problem after problem and I cant be arsed with it any more.

Just my luck that I seem to have a totally different loom to everyone else!

Hi Jondee, thanks for the link, very useful!

I suppose the question that remains is:

If I got a late spec wiring loom and isolated the cables listed and sent them to the firewall connector the loom would it work without issue?

On a late spec loom do the listed cables run back to the ECU or do they connect up under the dash somewhere?

Do you have any idea on how the pin outs for the early spec loom and the late spec loom compare when they plug into the ECU?

These numbers represent the three rows of three pins inside, which are :

1. Backup (reversing) light switch
2. Backup (reversing) light switch
3. Spare pin
4. Igniter power supply (black/orange wire)
5. Power supply to injectors (yellow wire)
6. Starter/cold start injector
7. Water temp gauge (on instrument panel)
8. Oil pressure gauge (on instrument panel)
9. Tacho (rev meter) signal

None of the wires that run thru that 9-pin plug have anything
to do with the ECU. They are just switched power supplies and
gauge inputs.

I have only compared pinouts from an early AE86 ECU and the
AE92 (late) ECU that came with my engine. The connector plugs
are completely different, but most of the pins have similar
functions (there are a few extra pins in use on the later ECU).

Sorry probably didn’t make my original question clear. On the early spec loom the bulkhead connector is only gauge inputs and power supply, however on the late spec loom it does not have this bulkhead connector.

My question was where these various cables go on the late spec loom, do they feed back into the ECU or are they simply re routed through the under dash harness. The point is the gauges still need their inputs; the starter & igniter still need their power feeds – if there is no bulkhead connector where do these wires come from (ecu or the under dash)

This is the situation for me is; as its proving very difficult to track down a early engine wiring harness I convert the readily available late spec one instead – but before I pay out for the loom I really want to know I haven’t over looked some key aspect – ECU/cable wiring differences/differing loom set up etc.

I am however quite tempted to get a late loom and convert it to what I need. It looks like I can pull the cables out of the pin outs on the ECU and swap them around, I might just do that – splice in the cables needed for the bulk head connector and see what happens.

AE86 engine harness help ..
When I modified the AE92 loom for use in my early model AE86,
there was no provision in the engine loom for the bulkhead plug. All
the wires went back towards the ECU in a single loom. I had to
intercept the relevant p/s and sensor wires, and splice them to a
spare bulkhead plug I scavenged off an AE85. This way my modded
loom finished up looking pretty much like the original AE86 loom.

I would have to go and have a look to be sure, but from memory
there are three mult-pin plugs that plug into the ECU. Two are from
the engine loom, and one is from the body loom. And I think there
was a fourth plug that connected to a socket beside the ECU.

It is unlikely that any of the wires previously included in the bulkhead
plug will pass thru the ECU. But it is possible that they will transfer
from the body or dashboard loom to the engine loom via a separate
socket near the ECU. This arrangement allows the engine loom to be
unplugged and removed with the engine.

So, if you are able to identify and trace the switched power supplies
(from the key switch) and sensor inputs, there is no reason why you
can't make a separate loom just for those wires.
