Fuel sender unit

Have you physically inspected the coil? I'm not saying it's impossible, but I find it very hard to believe that the coil has separated! You should be able to open the unit up so that the coil and contacts are exposed.
When I bought my sprinter I had to bend the slider on the top of the float arm so that it made solid contact with the coil, and the fuel gauge has now been working for 6years. |
