Abby - 4AGE rebuild project (lots of pics, 56k warning)
Aaight, couple of months have passed....... "new" engine started to develop some blue and white smoke, so... based on my new experiences it might be a blown headgasket
![]() Anyways, during x-mas holiday I have been taking the "old" engine apart.... turns out nothing was really wrong with it.. Just a blown headgasket. Meh, if I hadn't tried to get some mileage out of the 1 year warranty, I could have done with just replacing the gasket.. as it is now, it's on to a simple rebuild with some new oil pump and water pump and gaskets. Anyways, here some pics: Head being taken apart ![]() Cams are out ![]() No cams ![]() Head on bench ![]() Blown gasket between 3rd and 4th cylinder ![]() Nothing interesting at 1st and 2nd cylinder ![]() block overview ![]() flipped head (I probably shouldn't have done this without removing the buckets first....) ![]() Now on to something I came across after having the engine apart on the bench for a couple of days... didn't notice these scratches at first, so I'm wondering how they came there and how bad this would be when putting back the engine together: exhaust, 1st cylinder camretainer ![]() same camretainer, different angle ![]() exhaust, second retainer, looks like dirt mostly, or some pitting? ![]() exhaust, head journal, hmmm 3rd one iirc ![]() check all images here: http://www.cavey.nl/images/ae86/4age_rebuild/ So, just wonderirng. Something to worry about, these little marks, or just clean it up and slam it back together? Couldn't feel anything with my finger/nail, so it "seems" flat/flush... but well, seems to be softish material and when running under rpm's... (oh, the rattling I detected and asked about is most likely caused by the exhaust mounting... ) Where to go from here? I've been thinking about cleaning up the head first, removing the valves (got one of those little valve removel tools) and then? Any tips/tricks/ideas on decarbing, degreasing etc? After the head is done, I'll start on the block. Still need to remove the crankpulley, and then I can take it from there. ![]() |
