The stock ECU should be able to get the engine running but most probably it'll sound like a ported Wankel engine and probably smell like one, too (unburnt fuel in the exhaust). You'd need to adjust the idle pretty high to keep it from stalling, though - around 1500-2000rpm.
The camshafts have really steep ramps so the manifold vacuum changes very sharply on low RPMs. The ECU can't keep up with it so it'll be constantly jumping between rich and lean. The E-Manage Ultimate doesn't really help as it uses the same MAP signal - just applies its own fuel maps. To work around this problem, you'd need an ECU which can apply Alpha-N mapping (throttle position) instead of the normal speed-density (MAP) for fueling. A Megasquirt can do this and also offers a possibility for a hybrid Alpha-N which allows you to use TPS for low revs and transition to MAP in the upper RPM range. This should make lumpy cams a bit more bearable (and MOTable) in street use. |
