The best setup for autocross on very small tracks
Some useful information: We will build our project car for road car races on karting tracks. Our goal - fastest car there
![]() Till now I and my brother (Imants hate fwd) participate in these races in my VW Golf II gti 16v 139 bhp. This Golf is mostly stock with cheap (russian) sporty dampers at front and unknown Koni at back (from previous owner). I think springs are stock. Engine and everything else - stock. So our best laptimes on track (see pictures) are ~ 1:06-1:07 with good road tires (GoodYear Eagle F1 GS-D3). Best cars (Evo, BMW M3 e36 etc.) with road tires drive this lap about 1:01-1:02. In some of these races are allowed slicks. So the track record with slicks is 58,7 seconds. Our goal - laptime less than one minute on slick tires! |

Stock Golf II gti 16v 139 bhp VS. stock ae86. How do you think, which is faster on karting track? Golf has more torque. They both weight ~950. ae86 advantage is rwd.

ehmm...depends on the state of the suspension I think. Stock ae86 suspension isnt very spectacular at all..so I think a good driver would probably win with the golf.

RWD seems to be quite a advantage on these courses.. Either that or I'm a good driver..(nopes)

It means the shocks are too soft for the springs. This way you keep jumping up and down. (big no no)
And it's wise to have a harder spring in the front. It balances the car or else you would have oversteer the entire(!) time. 3/2 ratio might not be right. Depends on other mods. If you really want to tune your car right you need to test multiple springs. So you need more cash and time. |

You sure that konis are the ones that are not strong enough? Or maybe just koni reds? Zax runs konis with 8kg shocks and as far as I know he's pretty happy about it.

There is pretty simple test for this.
Push the car down and if the car bounces too much, shock is to weak for the spring. If the shock is too strong for the spring the car will sloooowly going up, because the spring can't go back to the default position. We already discused this somewhere on the board. My car was driven on the Mobikrog track by current croatian rally champion (Juraj Sebalj), and by his other colegues (Sinisa Crnojevic). Car was also test driven by another famous croatian driver, Sinisa Kosutic. All their inputs were taken to improve the overal handling of my car and i thank them on that. They all were pretty happy after the test drive. For next track season I might be runing on Toyo slicks R888, like Pero, or maybe this one, brand new toyo R1R ![]() Can't wait for track days start again! :wink: Drifting - best fun you can have in your car with your pants on! |

Well I can only tell you that it was a great improvement as I went from Koni to TRD. The car became much more stable :!:
