Smallport coil

I'm a bit confused. If you are using the smallport distributor you should also be using the smallport ECU since it runs a different ignition system
to the AE86 (VAST vs ESA). If that is the case I would assume you would also need the matching igniter for that system, making the point a bit moot.
So what's your setup like?
FWIW, a coil is a pretty simple thing.. you could probably get away with mixing and matching it.
From a club4ag smallport swap article:
The coil just operates on a pulse from the igniter and would be interchangeable if not for the connector to the igniter (directly linked with a ring connector v. through a harness connector), which is an easy fix with some mild rewiring if you don’t have a matching set.
