Oil cooler -> low oil pressure
the original 16v oil cooler is not a full flow oil cooler, it is a partial flow oil cooler.
If you use a mocal sandwich plate instead of the original sandwich place all the flow is redirected, thus converting the system from partial flow to full flow. As such you need to use a different oil cooler and bigger ID hoses ... I would not run my engine with full flow oil cooling with anything bellow 12mm ID (the ID of the original oil cooler is about 9mm, it might not sound much difference but in cross sectional area it is a lot of difference). Cheers. PS: we should meet one day, I live in herts. |

Oil cooler -> low oil pressure
Some 4A`s have oil pressure switches instead of oil pressure sensors, the only difference is that the switch activates a light for low oil pressure, and the pressure sensor gives feedback to a normal gauge.
They sit on the same place, a little forward between #1 exhaust tube and oil filter, if you have a hole there, and nothing screwed in, then you have a problem.. Standard 4AGE oil cooling setup, as mentioned above here, is only partial flow, a complete setup with sandwich, filter-reloc with 2 intake and 2 outtakes (For oil cooler and sandwich) gives you full flow. With this you can also use a thermostat (I know some Mocal sets have that) which lets oil through to the oil filter only when necessary. IMHO oil pressure is more important than oil temperature, optimal pressure is somewhere along 5,5-7 bars, 2,5 bar of oil pressure is going to kill your engine way faster than some 120-130 celcius degrees oil temperature. Because I couldnt afford a proper cooler setup, and I didnt want a half-arsed solution, I went for the short 4A oil filter bolt/union, and installed the filter straight onto the block, oil temps might get a bit high, but it beats low oil pressure.. Oil cooler -> low oil pressure
^The op went on to say that his oil pressure was good after switching to larger ID hose.
I'm about to piece together an oil cooler setup but can't decide between -8 and -10 hose. Regarding oil pressure, any downside to using larger -10 hose? It seems like it could be too big but I'm not expert. |
