Greek AE86 restoration/modification (pics)
Wait a second - you said that this is freshly imported car without greek registration and license plates ? Hmmm, the price for unmodified M3 sounds a little high, but keep in mind that some modifications can add greath value to the car. This car is race prepared - so you can calculate ~900 EU for big brake setup + ~500-800 for suspension, ~400+ for headers, ~500+ for full racing exhaust, ~400 for the chip (in the ECU), ~500-700 for cams. 13.6 for 1/4 mile is good - I think stock one is ~14.5 ?
So when you extract all these goodies from the price - the car is not so expensive. I don't know how much you must spend for greek registration. Now - if you compare this car to your Corolla - you will be upset. If you bought the Corolla in worse condition and restored it - the costs are higher than if you choose good car at higher initial price. But if you buy the car with idea to modify her - at the finish you will calculate all goodies (such as in M3 example) in the final cost (+ new paint and bodywork). Why your AE86 is so expensive ? List the mods ? Or this is just initial cost + repairs and restoration costs ? How much cost to paint the car - in Greece ? |

@jamie: Imagine you don't have any technical skills, no working space, no tools and no practical experience on fixing cars. You have a car and you want to fix it. You ask around and people tell you all sorts of things about many mechanics. You finally decide on one, based on many things, such as his work (on his car, of course) and his budgeting of the work to be done.
The work starts but the budget grows and grows and grows and THERE'S NOTHING YOU CAN DO, because your engine and gearbox are IN PARTS on the guy's bench. So, you tell me. Once again, I don't mind the money I paid. I mind that I didn't get ANY value for it. Not just bad value, but none at all. That's my problem. |

I understand you, man. My car is already over 11 months at the body shop for repairs and painting. Sad to hear that from you - "no value" sounds disappointing

Back from the dead to let you know where I'm at.
Since September, I went to the track once more (about 2 months ago), despite the state of the gearbox. There was an Italian Citroen C2 S1600 on track wich was rented by a Greek for a race and was tested by a greek auto magazine. I warmed my car up nicely and started to increase pace, here's what happened: -1st lap: 4th gear would not stay engaged unless throttle < 50% -2nd lap: excessive clutch slip on corner exits on 2nd and 3rd gear. Excessive force required to engage gears. -3rd lap: impossible to drive the car, exit to pits. -In the pits: I let her cool down for 30mins and backed off to try once more. Then the Italian mechanic fixing the S1600 shouts something and I stop. He kneels down puts his finger on the tarmac and brings it to his nose. I get out of the car. He says "olio cambio" and then "seconda-terza, terza-quarta cambio GRAU!". I understand that I'll probably walk home with the gearbox in bits if I continue. I drive off carefully and park the car for the last 2 months. So here's the situation: I'm looking for a used BUT not "repaired" gearbox to replace the "repaired" one. The idea is to get it through a mechanic that will source the box, install it and be totally responsible for it. That includes him taking back in case it's faulty. Prices for the T50 in Greece are in the 200-300 EURO range. The money is waiting in my bank, but it seems gearboxes are hard to come by these days, so I guess I'll just have to wait. In the meantime, my battery's gone, my tires are probaly flatspoted and dogs now piss on my wheels to mark their territory, as they do with permanently stationery objects, such as walls, trees, etc ![]() So, not really an update, but at least you get the picture... ![]() |
