Dyno proven header for AE86 ?????
I am interested in finding out if there is any aftermarket header
for the AE86 that is actually PROVEN to make more power than
the OEM cast iron manifold and 2>1 pipe.

By this I mean proven by way of before and after dyno testing, with no
other modification being carried out at the same time to cloud the issue.

Right now I like the look of the HKS Super Header 4>2>1 but can't find
any figures to prove how much torque it makes, or whereabouts in the
rev range. Love the look of it, only for that much coin, it has to show
some solid gains.

If anyone has any dyno curves for 4>2>1 headers, post 'em up Smile

Cheers... jondee86

I've seen several magazine articles and some websites that documented dyno sheets before and after a new exhaust.. they do make a difference, just not that impressive. These kind of mods only really shine after you sort the inlet side of your engine.

Yeah... and I have seen several sites that say there is nothing much
wrong with the standard cast iron manifold and 2>1 pipe. I am heading
down the ITB path, but shooting for a nice torque curve, rather than
peak power. First upgrade will be cams in the stock smallport engine.

What I want to avoid is putting the ITB's, aftermarket ECU and header
on at the same time, and not being able to isolate what gains were due
to the header. For 500+ Euros I would like to be certain that the header
was making a contribution to power, not just to the bling factor Tongue

Maybe I will wait and see what the ITB's and ECU can achieve with the
cast iron header. If it seems to be restricting power, then I can bolt on
a tube header and easily identify the gains.

If you prefer torque, choose a good 4-2-1 design, 4-1 is better for peak power application. Go for a design that's made by an AE86 specialist with race experience, rather than something made by a general tuning specialist such as HKS, or just an exhaust specialist. There are a lot of designs available. Tube diameter of manifold & exhaust should be a consideration too depending on your engine build, if you're uping the compression ratio.

Most will "gain" at least 1 hp... mass lost from stock manifold = almost 20#s

N1 cars were required to keep the stock manifold.... but companies like Toda made special headpipe and exhaust to allow them to breath

One thing..... a header on a stock engine will do little... modded engine results increase.........

Toda still have a 2>1 pipe and under diff exhaust in their catalog.
But anything aimed at N1 is designed for maximum top end power,
not a broad torque curve.

If I do go to the trouble of changing from the OEM cast manifold, it
will be to install a decent 4>2>1 set of headers with long primaries
and long secondaries, tuned to make more torque from low down
to the top of the mid-range.

I don't mind moving the peak torque up the rev range a bit, but I don't
want it to get so close to redline that I have to rev the s**t out of the
engine to get any decent performance. TORQUE RULEZ !!! Thumbs up!

I have no comparison.... stock vs the header I had "resurrected" a few years back...... The header was made by KBD, it fits lhd, it is a 4/2/1 type.
[Image: AEU86 AE86 - Dyno proven header for AE86 ?????]

Manufacturer - KBD or Dobi(originally KBD was known as Dobi back in the 80s)

4/2/1 type

Primaries - 38mm(1.5") x 406mm(16")
Secondaries - 45mm(1.8") x 406mm(16")
Collector - 66mm(2.6") x 102mm(4")
Adapter - 66mm-52mm x 255mm(10") the "stock" adapter allows the header to bolt to the stock cat...

Techno Pro Spirit in Japan has(use to have) an interesting rwd 4AGE header....... stainless steel...

It looks similar to the HKS.....

[Image: AEU86 AE86 - Dyno proven header for AE86 ?????][Image: AEU86 AE86 - Dyno proven header for AE86 ?????]

Here is the "translated" specifics...

Low in order to guarantee the response and torque in the middle rotary limits as for layout 4 -> 2 -> 1. But, pipe diameter 42.7 φ -> 48 φ -> 60 φ it was compatible also the power and the extension in the high rotary limits by the fact that it makes thicker than the present model. It makes the angle of the gathering section and it makes as much as possible loose exhaust efficiency raise substantially by the fact that.

Under the pricing section it reads....
* Presently it has become the long-term payment date item, payment date please inquire
