Portuguese AE86 with drum brakes in the back??

So a LHD levin with drum brakes on the rear is either a converted SR5 (you didnt mention if it is a levin, but if you say its Portugese, it would have to be) or has
a non-standard rear axle swapped in. You could try checking the chassis code for the differential code, that should tell you what the car came with from factory.

Also the Swiss Corolla SR (only pre august 1984) had drum brakes and was basically a LHD version of the Australian Sprinter AE86.
I also wouldn't be surprised if the some countries pre facelift model had some quirky cost saving involved. The Finnish AE86 had for instance the Japanese GT interior, so SR5/SR style seats and rear bench plus different doorcards.
