The number of map points that an ECU has is not an indication of an ECUs quality.
Most of the resolution that you need in a map is where the engine is least efficient, and so needs fine tuning as you can be +/- too much fuel very easily, so you set up a number of the cells with small RPM steps from idle to say 3000rpm. After that point you'll find that the engine's requirements are pretty linear so 1000rpm steps are pretty much okay after that, possibly even greater spacing. The reason that a lot of early ECUs used lots of map points was because of the processing requirements to do the required interpolation, a decent ECU will not just calculate the fuel & advance with the points around the cell its using (1x1) grid, but will factor in the areas two or more cells away (2x2 or 3x3) |
