He has winged the casing so it can carry more oil, much like you would do with a normal sump pan. The two lines running into the casing will be for the inclusion of a stand alone diff oil cooler. You would require a small electric pump to suck oil out, pass it through the cooler and then feed it back into the casing under pressure. This should drastically improve the lubrication as well.
