During the slalom days on the same track, the track layout is even slower and helmets are compulsary. If the car is in any way modified from stock setup, then a rollbar is compulsary. I believe these rules grew from experience so I'd think twice before running without a helmet.
The layout of this track is very tricky. Yes the speeds seem low, but there are almost no things to slow you down when things go wrong. In my case, I ended up on top of that hill/ridge you mentioned. All 4 wheels of the ground. If I had gone any faster I would have ended up over the ridge and onto the part of the track behind that. A fast competitor would have already reached that part of the track..do the math.. I read a couple of remarks on the gummen forum and strongly dissagree. The lelystad circuit is NOT the ideal drifting location. There are almost no safety measures in place and certainly no run-off area's. The circuit is tolerated by the municipality. The first person that becomes seriously injured or killed will lead to the closure of the track. Now imagine a club day, a FAR faster track layout then usual and a lot of drift indoctrated RWD people, some with skills but most with none at all. You can see that the stage seems set for disaster. It could have been you. That ridge could easily tip the car over. The fact that a heavy ass alfa 75 V6 put in the fastest time of the day tells me enough. Speeds were much to high. Any lower and those heavy ass POS wouldn't stand a chance. Just out of curiosity..what times did the E30 brigade run? I'm usually able to keep a couple of seconds between me and them, so that would be a nice indication. (BTW the fastest times during slalom days are never lower than 1:00. these times are by formula fords/opel lotus and a couple 270bhp, 700kg Escort mk2's) A wheel to steer the front of the car A pedal to steer the rear |
