nmwisima and NoHachi are confirming the same thing at the end - slip on the track is a speed killer. So I dont see the reason for arguing
It is obvious too, that on road with bad grip the drift is helping to keep the speed (WRC). So I'm thinking - its all about the braking. If braking can be done fast and accurate - so this is the way to go in and out of the turn with the highest speed. If the surface is dirty, so no grip - braking is useless and drifting is helping to keep the speed high.
