I compared BMW E23 728 rear calipers and pads to the AE86 ones.
The BMW pads have smaller friction area ! They haven't e-brake mechanism also (E23 uses drums for e-brakes!). I have a little strange way to modify rears - using Wartburg 353W fronts (4-pot but with solid discs!!!) - but this is exotic and will not be useful with conventional e-brake. I found some 2-pot rears in Opels so maybe this is the right modification for rear brakes - cheap and widely available ?
