That's a very sharp observation!  I also watched this week's Cool JDM show (yes, that's actually a "real" title!) earlier today. One of their employees attended the Initial D 30th anniversary meeting, where all this was presented. Apparently, Toyota had two AE86es with them that had the G16E engine swapped into them.
