The neatest solution would be to install an in-tank fuelpump-in-plastic-swirlpot assembly from a more modern car. But it is never going to happen without some cutting and welding.
Example: http://www.nastyz28.com/forum/showthread.php?t=228464 [Edit] Above post uses a 99-02 Camaro LS1 (5.8 v  fuel pump assembly.. they can be bought new for 140 dollars ex. shipping and import taxes from Rockauto.VW used something similar on later golf GTI's and I'm sure many other manufacturers do.
