More input Stephanie.....
Factory starter motor has a heat shield attached, plus there are
heat shields attached to the factory exhaust downpipes. If all of
these are missing, heat soak is a known problem with the AE86
starter motor.

You could try using zip ties to secure a layer of reflective heat
shield material around the body of the starter (double sided
silver stuff with reinforcing fabric between the layers. Whatever
you can buy at your local speed shop... kind of like this...
