225-45-15 should work, 225-50-15 if you need the added gearing.

With that said, I do remember r888s being REALLY wide in most sizes. If the 205 is similar you should be able to get it onto the 9.5" rims. Just measure across the thread and check if its a true 205 or a cheater.

And you are right the 205's R888's feel very wide on an 8" rim.
