That thickness measurement is very useful when buying used heads.
Is there a specific place to measure this on the head and are both
types of 16v heads the same measurement ?

I've learned this quite recently.... The race shop near me told me the measurement - 4.563" , or 115.9002mm.

I've measured a few heads so far... the thickest was 116.2, but that head was NOT clean, and so gasket residue likely was the difference. Finally, I've had a couple of chats with a few members about this... the "accepted" logic was that Toyota made them to a set measurement in mm... so the thought was 116.0000. The difference between 115.9 and 116 as measured in SAE scale is 4.563" to 4.567". 4 thousandths is minimal when it comes to a head cut, so either 115.9, or 116 is the thickness of an uncut head.

Where to measure.... I measure at the front of the head, close the intake camshaft front cam cap. It should measure the same from anywhere on the top gasket surface to the mounting surface.
