There's was a blue one in germany, built by a german company I believe.
Nothing wonderfull about a convertible AE86 imho, it is already a flexible tin can, taking away the roof will do it no favors. FABRICA MI DIEM, PVNC! |

The German one was produced by Voll (sold by Schwan) in Germany and was part of two cabriolet prototypes created to see if the market could be expanded beyond the Celica. The surviving car features a soft-top with a targa roof. There other one was totalled only a few years after it became road legal.
About the Tama cabriolet: there is only one known survivor. It's assumed all others are gone. 1983 - AE86 Sprinter Trueno - import project 2013 - Honda Civic sport - daily driver 2004 - AEU86 dot ORG - daily domain Support our forum, buy from the AEU86 shop:

Both have been based upon a two-door, but that's about where the similarities end. The Voll car is a two-door zenki Levin and the Tama car is a kouki Trueno. Both cars feature a tonneau cover, but the Tama is mounted where the top of the rear seat originally sits, while the Voll is mounted where the rear parcel shelf used to be. The construction of the Voll car has been done much more professionally, while the Tama car looks like they simply cut off the roof and just continued from there onwards. The Tama car features seats in the back, but you can't sit on them unless your back is at an 90-degree angle (so leaning forward). Also, when the tonneau cover is closed, you can't sit in the rear of the Tama car, while you can sit normally in the Voll. You can spot these differences much better side by side: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I must say, when the tonneau is stored, the overall shape of the Tama car is more beautiful than the Voll car. 1983 - AE86 Sprinter Trueno - import project 2013 - Honda Civic sport - daily driver 2004 - AEU86 dot ORG - daily domain Support our forum, buy from the AEU86 shop:

Weird, I had a Voll converted AA63 Celica GT convertible, and they had the rear seats on a 90 degree angle as well. Must be something to do with the roof mechanism.

I borrowed a Celica ST202 convertible for a few days and that thing felt flimsy. I can only imagine how bad an AE86 would be without a roof.
Both of those conversions look to have been done professionally though, so I'll give them credit for that. Strangely enough, I received an email many years ago from someone who had found an AE86 convertible for sale in Japan. So perhaps that was the car in the images. From memory, it certainly looks very similar. |

On my Celica you could feel the car flexing when you pushed on the b pillar and stuck your finger in the door gap. Also towed with it once and i am sure I saw the back end bending down when the rope came under tension... The 80s where a wild time.
