in Formula 1.....

at least that is the pre-season prediction. Toyota has shown very little true speed and neither driver has shown much enthusiasim....

Ho hum.... it is a pitty that of the 2 racing only V8 engines Toyota has made in recent years only the pushrod NASCRAP engine has won....(albeit in the truck division)

I have no clue why they are in F1 at all...I thought that they were going to focus on a "green" image and produce bread and butter models only..hence the axe for the MR2, the lack of any true performance model (see the new Yaris..no longer called sport) and the loss of the supra. Engines have been nothing to get exited about...everything just very boring..Good thing we still have Honda for decent cars.

A pedal to steer the rear

Doc,

Whats the last good 4x4 sportscar Toyota made then? (not counting their trucks which still are brilliant but not usefull for rallying).

Also with rallying the last good car Toyota made was build mid 90ies or something?

Lets face it, Toyota left its racing pedegree since then and went the eco route. It'll take them a long while to catch back up, and probably some important internal changes before the technical people can go all out again.

That said, they have shown with some of the Lexus models that they can build promising cars....

Reluctantly I have to agree with NoHachi, Honda's the only Japanese brand still building thoroughbred production sports cars (S2000, NSX). All though Mazda shows promise aswell with the MX5 and possibly the follow up to the RX7 thats rumoured to be released soon.

Toyota stopped doing rallies around 1999 i believe, with the Corolla AE111 wich had a BEAMS Turbo engine.

At that moment, they still where competitive and even now the Corolla dominates local rally events/championships.

So anything in 2000?

But those aren't with the newer models are they?

Heck even Hachi Roku's still actively and competitivly compete in rallies in their class.

Guys, why someone will try to dominate for decades in any kind of sport ?
If you have success in rallying - you will sell better (take a look to Celica, Impreza, Lancer for example). But there is no need to be on the top for years - except you are Ferrari and have only hi-end performance cars for sale.

jamie,

But pulling out completely from motor sports means that the reputation you've build slowly dies out and is forgotten.

In Toyota's case though I think this was done on purpose. Their target market is the average middle aged parent with good income that wants a relyable, practical, high quality, low maintenance car. Thats as far removed from motorsport goals as you can get.

Just look at Honda, they're proud of their motorsports involvement and it shows through in their models which are all sporty. Even a low end Civic has a sporty setup and even their low cc engines sound and feel sporty. It attracts a certain market that has earned Honda a certain reputation that doesn't always help their sales as that market isn't particularly filled with people that have money to spend (mostly youngsters).

I think Toyota's choice not to concentrate on sporty models and not concentrate on competition is one that fits their current market strategy.

Unfortunately for us speed and sports lovers, it does mean Toyota gave up on something we want back Smile
