Yes that is absolutely right, but refers to a sum of many characteristics. A number of the various parts the damper is assembled from, could be the same quality (material, design tolerances etc.) couldn't they? Of course they wouldn't be identical products, but their quality would be comparable. And we are still talking about same application products, which is probably too theoretical in this case, since we don't even know the basic specs of the two dampers we are comparing.

HTS are much stiffer, and have better adjustments capabilities.
Also, much easier to adjust rear damper.

I believe it's worth extra time. Especially for you, Japan is so close to NZ Smile
You don't wanna know how hard it is to ship in Europe, especially non-EU part Wink

I'm pro koni: used to have the yellow on a nissan micra and I've tried them on several friends' cars. Only road use though. And I can't compare to HTS since I've never even saw one....

I suppose you are talking about getting short-stroke yellows (maybe for mr2) and adapting them to the 86 strut?

Well, I have never seen an AGX and TRD shock on front of me in parts, so I would only be guessing as you say. But I would think there would be some non-critical parts which could be shared.

Koni are used in the local V8 Supercars, RX7 (pro 7's), and BMW series as a control shock, so there are plenty of proven race series using them. When I talked to the koni guys today, they said they strip them, and stroke and revalve them to any spec I want. So I guess its up in the air for now.

They are original-AE92 dampers for sure, maybe MR2 also.

First and foremost the damping curve HAS to meet the demands of the car. After that comes stuff like brand, quality etc etc.

Koni also has some double adjustable stuff that'll fit the 86. Take a look in the strut/shock thread over at hybridZ (very long). Everything that'll fit the front of a 240Z will fit in an AE86 too.

So which shocks would you go for in the front and rear if the Koni brand was used?

In the rear the koni guy tells me they actually machine a groove in the shock to fit a cir-clip to hold the coilover sleeve.

You can find partnumbers in the hybridZ forum thread. They have several options there, but can't be bothered to read through all those pages again:-) i'll drop a link soon.

I'm going with bilstein motorsport shocks from the vw golf/jetta mk1 (shorter then stock) that i'm going to revalve for my weight and chassis setup..so thats an option too. As said, you can use escort mk2 gp4 turret shocks in the rear (turret=4link conversion) from bilstein. Only problem is that there are no adjusters on the billies so the shop has to get the chassis dynamics calculations good the first time.

Rightoh, here are the koni partnumbers. These are not oem shocks, no ae92 or sw20. They are better quality then the normal yellows and also a bit more expensive. Should stand up better to the rigors of racing. Also to fit them you might need to sand some paint off them since they are slightly thicker then ideal. The Koni 8610-1437RACE is a rebound is adjustable shock with bigger cylinders then stock(less hysterisis and more stable under high temps. With the 8611-1259RACE you can idependently adjust compresion and rebound.
The shocks (when valved correctly) are in no way comparable with normal ae86 offerings. They are leagues ahead of HTS/TRD etc.
For the rears google around for the sportcompactcar article describing their coilover build. You might need a bit more travel, but you'll have some partnumbers to start from. Also try and find the koni race catalog online, these contain the shocks sold to racers directly.
