Ricks project AE85 (Back together with dyno results)
Hi I am a new member and this is my project car.

I couldnt afford to pay the overinflated prices for a AE86 so I ended up with a AE85 as my project car..

When my AE-85 is finally finished it will be used on the road as well as used for tarmac track racing, hillclimbs etc.. nothing to serious but just for a bit of fun.

Currently I am test fitting every thing first, then the car will be stripped down again and painted and reassembled. The Motor, gearbox, diff, front and rear suspension, rollcage have been installed, there is tones more to do but the next step is to sort out the rear guards requiring some sort of flare or body kit.

A few Details so far (I will try and keep updated):

Powertrain
AE101 4AGZE supercharged motor
2 1/4 exhaust system
Subaru water to air intercooler
Hilux diff, LSD
Supra gearbox
Custom bellhousing
Custom single piece drive shaft.
TRD Engine mounts

Suspension:
MA61 supra front struts
MA61 supra front disk brakes
AE92 levin/trueno rear disk brakes
TRD race springs
Tokico Adjustable shocks all round
Whiteline front adjustable swaybar
Whiteline rear adjustable swaybar
Whiteline adjustable panhard rod
Whiteline adjustable trailing arms
Adjustable caster arms
Adjustable camber plates
Custom NRCA's
Traction brackets
New bushes all round

Wheels and tires:
15x6.5 Fortran? rims for now.

Body:
8 piont roll cage
Rear shock absorber tower brace
TRD wing/fiberglass hatch
Fiberglass rear guards

This how she looked when I first I bought it back in 2004, stock standard

Within the first few weeks of owning it I started to strip it down and began work on the removel of the rust. Which I took my time with as I have seen so many rust repair jobs done poorly with rust repairing in a matter of months.

This is after I got it back from getting the rollcage installed, I was very impressed with the quality of workmanship. Cool

This is the motor I will be using 4agze out of a AE-101 I will be keeping the supercharger on it and will be running the factory ECU, but I am going to rearange the intake setup to make it flow abit better (hopefully) using a big port rwd intake manifold.

I planed on mounting the race seats onto the factory rails but because I am a tall bugger my head was hitting the roof and that was without a helmet on, so new seat mounting points were made, they sit much lower and further back.

Hi There

Great looking project.

I have heard a lot of hilux Diff being used - what are the major advantages of it?

Regards Johnny

Very nice project. Thumbs up!
In other words: your AE85 is becoming an AE86 after the rebuild. Smile

Are you going to put N2 flares up front as well? Dumb question

The hilux diff is pracitcally indestructible johnny.. that'sthe main advantage. Should you manage to destroy it, the 7 inch ring and pinions are available a lot cheaper than the regular 6.7 stuff since all the off-road (r&p killing) people have ensured a bigger aftermarket. That way you can get american made r&p's, which are usually a lotcheaper than the japanese counterparts.

As said above they are pretty much indestructible, plus an AE86 lsd rear ends are around $1000 NZD to buy here, wont handle as much power etc etc.. The supra gearbox and hilux diff combination, is a good one, a fair few AE86 owers here use this type of setup in there drift cars where they cop heaps of abuse like clutch kicks etc.

Sort of, if anything it should be better than a factory AE86 (dont hit me  )

At this stage it will only have rear flares..

I didnt import it myself it was imported/registered in new zealand in June 1989. I bought it in 2004. I went for the ae85 because its cheaper than a ae86 and even if I did buy a ae86 I wouldnt be using any of the drivetrain, motor, gearbox etc so it would have been a waste. If i had a oringinal ae86 I would want to restore it to factory condition not turn it into a race car.

No, unless they where privately imported as far as Iam aware.. They had AE86 baged cars sold new there from 1983-1984, however they are not a ture ae86, they were sold with a 4AC motor, single cam, carbs, solid front discs, drum rear end. Only sold with levin style fronts and sprinter tail lights.
