I have been following this series of horrible horrible rust:

As you can see you can buy a lot of rust for 300000 yen (2600 dollars) and not a lot of car. But at least the engine was a decent built with AE92 head and AE101 throttle bodies, so that was money well spent. In the first video, you can see the whole right rear quarter only consists of body filler as the metal rusted away over the past decades.
The owner decides to just take all the parts and forget about the shell. Also, don't try to follow his example of removing the transmission as that was a very dodgy job.

In his most recent video, he got a new shell to transplant everything into:

I can't wait to see the next parts! Hurray!

Whenever I see images of rusty cars like that I always think how they were once a cool new car that someone was proud to drive out of a dealership.
The strange thing is that if they were Ferraris in similar condition then someone would still be happy to pay a fortune for restoration.

Or a GT-R. Or a Supra Mk IV. Or an AE86 Black Limited. Or a genuine UK-spec AE86. Basically, anything worth more than 40K that requires a weldathon to make it in an acceptable state again would justify investing time/money. The ordinary AE86 simply isn't in that price region yet. And, as you can see in this video series, there are plenty of usable shells available.

Post 299 of this thread was about a guy breaking AW11s for spares. I said at the time that I would go check it out because it isn't far from my father's house.
Well I'm sorry it took me a while, but guess where I've been.

And then on the way back I saw this a few miles up the road:

At least on the surface some of those look like they could be restored but considering the weather conditions they have to endure a closer look would reveal months of work.

Did you manage to speak to the owner of that AW11 place? He's supposedly quite famous amoung the MR2 enthusiasts.

Whilst we're on the subject of GT86es, I also happened to observe this during the weekend before Christmas:

I literally saw the owner park up the GT86 on this spot and walk away to do some errands. I decided to make a photo of the car and cross the road to take another one. Before I actually could take the second photo, this happened:

Apparently the owner didn't have a disabled drivers permit. Banging head

In case you wonder how these two were able to be present not longer than 1 minute after the violation happened, that's because their HQ is located only 30 metres away. They probably observed it happening and decided to immediately take action. And I don't mean warning the owner, but immediately fine him. Big Grin

And yes, there are 86 owners around that do have a permit. Livelaughlevin has a permit and he suffers from the prejudice that an 86 owner can't legally park on a disabled persons parking space.

I did message the guy on facebook because I wanted to meet him but he said he was busy over Christmas, so sadly the building was closed when I got there. Next time I'm in the area I'll try to find a better day to visit.

There used to be a guy near me who had an S13 and a disabled badge. He kept getting tickets because no one ever believed that a disabled person would drive an S13.

This was posted to my flickr recently, then promptly forgotten about. I'm not sure what caught me off guard more, seeing an 86 in a disabled space or seeing an 86 that still hasn't been turned into a drift car:
