Ivan's coupe: seeing RED
Well, the baby steps continue. Had a bit of time to work on it today so I started installing the sound deadening to the firewall.
I'm using Silent Coat but I have the really thin (2mm) variant, must admit I was hoping it would dampen more than it actually seems to be doing. Might need to double up on it in critical areas. I also have foam noise insulation pads to go on top of the butyl mats but those are not going on the firewall since it has its special big insulation mat going on it eventually. I think I will add some thermal insulation to the gearbox / exhaust area since I remember 86's like to get toasty there. Next up (most likely): I will start restoring my HVAC related boxes at home (new foam everywhere, give the ventilator a good once-over, replace carbon brushes if required, get the heater core cleaned and checked). Nice to see some progress again! I can say the transmission tunnel can get pretty hot on my passenger side, so extra insulation can't hurt.
This reminds me I still need to take apart my interior and place the sound-deadening I bought over a year ago. When my car was welded up at the rear arches, most sound-deadening was removed and I reckon it will make a difference in noise. 1983 - AE86 Sprinter Trueno - import project 2013 - Honda Civic sport - daily driver 2004 - AEU86 dot ORG - daily domain Support our forum, buy from the AEU86 shop:

I had a plastic sheet in my green car under the pedals as a flat footrest and it melted at the exhaust side. My shoe got stuck to the floor. So it gets hot there

To be exact, everything you put on the inside is a bit of a kludge heat insulation wise. I will be sticking some reflective sheet on the outside of the tunnel and firewall around the exhaust area too. Even that is not very effective. The best solution is making a heat shield out of corrugated aluminium sheet that has an air gap to the heat-producing item. This is standard on many new cars. I have the trans tunnel shielding of a Mazda 3 that I will try to fit around the gearbox (this is what the miata lot often do, no idea if it will work out). And have some chinesium corrugated sheet to make shields out of for the exhaust area. All still a ways off in the future though.

As I was saying earlier I am tearing into my scrounged together HVAC system parts since they have seen better days. This evening I took a look at the blower unit.
As is standard with these things, the foams have all gone to shit and there is plenty of surface rust to be found since this was all bare steel. What is even worse is the state of the blower motor itself. I took it apart to have a look at the brushes and this was what I found inside: All that foam has to go somewhere I guess.. there is a rubber cooling pipe on the motor attached to the blower housing that it probably entered through. I took the brushes out and could probably find fitting replacements (size is 6x7x13, the 13mm length is unsure but you can always trim to fit). But since the commutator looks a little worn and new brushes are 12 euro's ex. shipping, I just ordered a new aftermarket blower motor (four seasons 35516). Gave the fan impeller wheel a good cleaning: New foams should arrive sometime this week so to-be-continued it is. FABRICA MI DIEM, PVNC! |
