Hydraulic Clutch
Hi everyone, Im new to this forum, and have just purchased my first ae86. It is a 1985 Corolla GTS 4A-GE, and there are a few minor problems, one of which I was hoping you guys could help me with. The clutch has absolutely no resistance until it is about an inch or so off the floor, and catches extremely low. My local mechanic says it is probably a hydraulic clutch issue, but do our cars have hydraulic clutches? Either way Im open to any help and ideas, thanks.

Yep, the 4AGE has a hydraulic clutch.

The problem you describe sounds like your hydraulic system has air in it (due to low level of fluid). Best try to flush the system like you would flush a break system: one person in the car pumping on the pedal and one bleeding on the nipple.

I had the same problem (clutch engaging very close to the floor) and
it was caused by the slave cylinder being partly seized. Particles of
rust had jammed the piston so that it could not move freely in the
cylinder. The fluid was like rusty water Undecided

You should take the slave cylinder off and dismantle it to inspect the
cylinder bore. If it is badly rusted, you should replace it with a new
one, and then bleed the system with fresh fluid.

Clutch master leaks on the drivers side of the firewall... runs down and
goes under the carpet Confused Most likely it will be wet under the pedals and
the fluid will be attacking the paint.

Fitting a new master cylinder is a bi*ch, as the nuts are high up under the
dash, and you need to be upside down to reach them !!! Take some
patience pills before you start the job Smile
